Elena had resigned on the very day he and Serena flew overseas to watch the World Cup.

For twelve years, Elena had told him everything she did.

This was the first time he knew absolutely nothing about her life.

Alex panicked for reasons he couldn’t explain.

He immediately started calling his friends.

He contacted almost every friend of Elena’s he could reach.

No one knew where Elena had gone.

Only then did Alex suddenly remember the terrible fight he and Elena had had before he left with Serena for the game.

That day, Elena’s eyes had gone red with anger as she said to him, “I’m finally crazy enough to cut you off for good! Alex, I regret loving you for twelve years!”

The panic in Alex’s chest reached its peak.

He immediately booked a train ticket online to Elena’s hometown, Lakewood, Virginia.

He was so anxious he couldn’t even wait for tomorrow’s flight.

He bought an Amtrak Acela ticket for around eight that night.

Serena’s eyes were red from crying as she blocked his way.

“Why are you going to find her?”

“She’s my wife. Who else would I look for?”

Alex snapped in frustration.

“You aren’t married. She isn’t your wife yet.”

“She stayed with me for twelve years. In my heart, Ellie is my wife.”

Every word Alex said was firm.

Serena became even more emotional.

“How can you still want to be with someone like that?”

“She’s so cruel. If she could kill a cat today, she could kill you tomorrow.”

“You said Elena stayed with you for twelve years. I’ve stayed with you for thirty.”

Alex hesitated for a moment.

“It has to be a misunderstanding. Elena isn’t that kind of person.”

“The reality is that Serena’s cat died because of her. She’s irresponsible.”

The person who spoke was Margaret Charleston, Alex’s mother.

Margaret stood beside Serena, her face dark and stern.

“Anyone with a sense of responsibility wouldn’t let a cat die, no matter how badly they fought.”

“If she didn’t want to take care of it, she could have said so. A cat is still a life. How could she be that cruel?”

Alex explained, “I checked the cameras. Elena didn’t kill the cat. It starved to death.”

“Then she still starved it. Why didn’t she leave enough cat food before she left?”

“Even if she didn’t want to keep it, she could have handed it to someone else. Stop defending her.”

Alex was so anxious his chest burned, and he truly didn’t have the patience to explain more.

He headed for the door.

“If we can’t talk this through, then let’s not talk for now.”

Margaret blocked him, her attitude firm.

“I won’t let you go find Elena.”

“Since she wants to break up, that means she made the right choice.”

“When you two first got together twelve years ago, I objected.”

“You didn’t listen, so I let it go.”

“But now you’re both thirty. It’s time to settle down.”

“Serena stayed unmarried for you. She followed you all these years without a title, without a real place beside you. Don’t you know that?”

“Compared with Elena, Serena is more suitable for you.”

“Now that Elena has left, she won’t come back. I’m your mother, but I’m also a woman, so I understand how she feels better than you do.”

“During the twelve years you were with Elena, Serena was there too. Whether you and Serena ever crossed that line or not, anyone with eyes could see what was happening.”

“And before Elena left, she went to Serena’s place.”

“Your clothes were at Serena’s place. Your beautiful memories were at Serena’s place.”

“Everything she should have seen, and everything she shouldn’t have seen, she must have seen.”

“When a woman can leave without fighting, without crying, without saying a single word, it means she’s done down to the bone.”

“Alex, do you love her?”

Before Alex could answer, Margaret continued.

“Maybe you love her. But not enough. Because in your heart, you left a place for Serena.”

“No woman can accept the person she loves keeping another woman in his heart.”

“Twelve years. Three World Cups. Every time, you let Serena stay by your side. That proves Serena matters more to you than Elena does.”

Alex refused to accept it.

His eyes reddened with panic as he denied it.

“No. I’m just used to watching the games with Serena.”

“The person I’ve always wanted to marry is Elena.”
