It was early evening when I lay down, barely settling in before my phone rang.

My best friend—Tamsin.

“Have you seen her post?” she demanded the second I picked up. “What the hell is going on with Callen and that girl?”

I opened her post.

A grid of photos filled the screen.

Different angles, different poses—but always the same necklace, catching the light at her throat.

The caption read:

In the bottom-right photo, half a branded gift bag slipped into frame.

So that was why he’d come home at noon.

To grab her birthday present.

Tamsin was still going off on the other end.

“You’ve been together five years—married for six months—and she’s already this bold? What is wrong with him?”

I said, “We’re not legally married.”

Silence.

A long one.

Then, quietly, “What do you mean?”

“We had the ceremony. That’s it. We never signed anything.”

I said it again, flat, like it didn’t belong to me anymore.

Another stretch of silence followed. When Tamsin spoke again, her voice had softened.

“So what are you going to do?”

I glanced at the packed suitcase by the wall and smiled.

“I’m flying to Paris tomorrow. A firm there made me an offer a while ago.”

“He’s just going to let you go?”

“He doesn’t know.”

And even if he did—it wouldn’t change anything.

After I hung up, I opened Mireya’s post again.

I hesitated for a second.

Then I tapped the heart.
