My Fiancé Married My Adopted Sister, Then Called ME the Mistress?! Chapter 09

“Idris, even seeing you is hard for me.”

“It’s not that I still have feelings for you. It’s just… something I can’t quite name.”

Something crossed her mind, and a bitter, ironic smile touched Shawna’s lips.

“No one came out of what happened between our parents unscathed.”

“And you repeated the tragedy without even bothering to look into the truth.”

“Your mom died, and you hated my family for over a decade. My mother died-do you really think I don’t hate.

you too?”

Her tone was soft, but the words sank like a needle straight into Idris’s chest.

The pain left his face drained of color.

“But Shawna, I really love you.”

“I still remember us making a wish at the fountain, promising to stay together for the rest of our lives.”

As he recalled the past, his lips trembled.

Shawna couldn’t help thinking about those times too.

Back when they were deeply in love, she used to curl up in his arms, talking about having two kids after they got married-a boy and a girl, so they would never have to envy anyone else.

Now, those memories felt like nothing but a cruel joke.

She looked up at him and said calmly, “What good are memories? No matter how beautiful those vows were, they didn’t stop you from humiliating me at that wedding, did they?”

“Without you, I can finally live in peace.”

She turned, walked into the house, and closed the door.

Idris watched the door shut in front of him, aching to move, yet completely frozen.

He didn’t leave right away.

He rented a house nearby and waited by Lake Erie every morning for Shawna to walk past.

She passed by countless times but never spared him a single glance.

He watched her grow stronger, saw more smiles on her face, and eventually watched her make new friends.

She was truly starting over. Building a life that had no room for him.

Seeing this, Idris felt happy for her, but heartbroken for himself.

If he hadn’t blindly pursued revenge, he never would have lost her.

He would have been the one standing by her side now.

They would have had their wedding five years ago.

If everything had gone as planned, they might already have the two children they once dreamed of.

He thought of the baby he had given up back then.

Unable to hold it in any longer, he sat on the stone steps, buried his face in his hands, and wept bitterly.

He was the one who had thrown away the happiness within his reach.

Later, Idris bought the cottage Shawna was renting, putting the property under her name.

He left the deed outside her door.

Without knocking or leaving a word, he left.

Shawna only learned about what happened next through a video online.

A sedan driving along a mountain road had been hit directly on the driver’s side by a falling rock.

The driver was struck and died on the spot.

Shawna’s hand, clutching her phone, gave a violent shudder.

She recognized the license plate-it was Idris’s car.

A brief pang shot through her chest. Then, just as quickly, it faded.

Just then, Mrs. Merriweather, her neighbor, knocked.

“Shawna! My husband made lobster roll today. Come try some!”

Shawna put down her phone and headed for the door, her voice light and cheerful.

“Coming! Mr. Merriweather’s cooking is amazing-I could smell it all the way inside!”
