My Fiancé Married My Adopted Sister, Then Called ME the Mistress?! Chapter 02

The woman was about to say something, but froze when she saw my face.

A second later, she sneered.

“So it’s you. I should’ve known no other waitress would be stupid enough to bump into Andrea on purpose.”

“Knowing she’s pregnant and still running into her… you really are heartless.”

The woman was Gemma Nash, my former best friend.

Back in college, when she was falsely accused of stealing, I was the one who found proof and cleared her name with the dean.

To this day, I still couldn’t understand why she turned on me at the wedding.

“You have the wrong person. I just got to the hotel and haven’t even seen Andrea.”

I bit back my frustration and tried to explain patiently.

But Idris suddenly lunged forward and grabbed my arm.

His grip tightened, as if trying to crush my bones.

“Still denying it?”

“You vanish for five years, then show up today and go after Andrea—all to get back at me, isn’t it?”

“It wasn’t me. You can check the…”

Before I could finish saying security footage, Andrea stepped around the corner.

Her eyes were bloodshot as she dropped to her knees in front of me suddenly.

“Shawna, Mom did wrong back then—she has to take her punishment to make things right for Idris’s mother.”

“If you’re still bitter about the wedding, take it out on me. Just please don’t hurt Idris.”

Idris shoved me aside and quickly helped her to her feet, his face full of concern.

“Her mom’s the one who messed up. What right does Shawna have to hold a grudge?”

Gemma looked at me with disgust.

“Exactly. That feud should have ended back then. But Shawna sneaks in here dressed as a waitress—clearly she’s up to no good.”

She stared at me. “You just can’t stand seeing Idris and Andrea happy, so you want to ruin it.”

A heavy pressure weighed on my chest, making it hard to breathe.

My mother had done nothing, and yet they’d hounded her to her grave.

What right did they have to say the past was settled?

I wanted to scream and ask them why they kept targeting me when I had already kept my distance.

But the sharp pain in my stomach reminded me that arguing with them was pointless.

Swallowing the metallic taste in my throat, I gave my word.

“Idris and I have been done for years, and that’s never going to change.”

A flicker of shock crossed Idris’s eyes, and his arms tightened around Andrea.

As if completely unaware, Andrea smiled through her tears.

“I knew you wouldn’t make the same mistakes Mom did.”

Then, putting on a panicked look as if she had misspoke, she added, “Shawna, you’ve grown much more sensible after five years.”

“Still…”

She looked me up and down.

“If you want Idris to forgive you and Mom, you can just tell me.”

“He treats me so well. He bought me a mansion and didn’t even blink dropping two million dollars on a ring for me.”

“You really don’t need to play the victim like this.”

My hanging hand twitched involuntarily.

Through the thin fabric of my pocket, my fingers brushed against the lab report I had received earlier today.

I used to dream about our wedding. But when we were picking rings and I wanted a simple band to save money, Idris held my hand with a look of guilt.

“Shawna, I’ll make a lot of money one day and buy you a huge diamond ring.”

Now he’d stopped pretending to be broke, and the ring had gone to Andrea instead.

Meanwhile, to pay for my mother’s medical treatments, I sold our house and pinched every penny.

In the end, I couldn’t save my mother, and the sheer exhaustion left me with cancer.

Now I couldn’t even afford surgery without getting harassed by them.

Suddenly, everything felt utterly meaningless.

Seeing me remain silent, Idris scoffed.

“Thinking playing the victim will get my forgiveness? That’s way too easy.”

“Shawna, there’s no way I’m letting this rest. Your mom needs to eat crow at my mom’s grave before I’ll even consider cutting you any slack.”

I looked at him, my voice flat.

“Idris, neither I nor my mother care about your forgiveness.”

I didn’t tell him my mother was dead. I was afraid he would actually laugh in satisfaction.

My shift tonight was ruined, so I turned to leave.

Before I could take a step, Andrea grabbed me.

“Shawna, why are you and Mom still so stubborn? What’s so hard about saying sorry?”

She pulled so hard that the cheap fabric of my pocket tore open.

The diagnostic paper slipped out and hit the floor.

As I reached down to grab it, Idris beat me to it.

Reading the test results, Idris stared at me in shock.

“You have stomach cancer?”
