My Fiancé Delayed Our Marriage for His Girl Best Friend, So I Walked Away Chapter 08

The familiar ceiling told me I was still at the Nelson estate.

Gavin must have been waiting for me to wake up.

The moment he saw my eyes open, he couldn’t hide the relief flooding his face.

He reached for me, then pulled his hand back, asking carefully.

“How do you feel? Does anything hurt?”

That gentle voice. I hadn’t heard it in so long.

The last time he’d sounded like that was back when the trauma had its claws in me, and he’d sat by my side through every dark hour.

His warmth hit me now, and my stomach turned.

The scene from the accident flashed through my mind.

My parents and I, heading home. We’d been talking about what to have for dinner.

A speeding sports car slammed into us and sent our car off a cliff.

I survived by sheer luck.

Then I remembered my parents’ bodies, thrown into the ocean by Rebecca.

I tried to get up and crashed to the floor. Gavin flinched.

He dropped to his knees in front of me.

“Samantha, your parents’ bodies are safe. I still have them.”

“Once you’re better, we’ll bury them together. I found a beautiful hillside plot.”

“I swear I’m not lying to you…”

The look on his face made me sick.

I let out a bitter laugh.

“You’re the one who killed them, and you’re playing the good guy? I must be out of my mind- sleeping next to the man who murdered my parents.”

The color drained from Gavin’s face.

He’d never admitted it outright. But he’d never denied it either.

His mouth opened. Nothing came out. He went silent.

“Samantha, I know what I did. But for five years, I’ve been trying to make it right.”

“I saved your life. Doesn’t that count for something? Just give me one chance.”

“Rebecca’s gone. I sent her away. She’s not coming back. Punish me however you want.”

The regret in his eyes looked real.

So what.

I should never have let him save me in the first place.

Iowed my parents that much.

“I don’t need you to make it right. I need justice.”

Back then, I hadn’t seen who was driving the car that hit us.

All I knew was what Gavin told me later-that the driver had also died in the crash.

He’d gone to great lengths to keep the truth from me.

Seeing the resolve in my eyes, the light in Gavin’s dimmed.

The silence stretched on until he finally spoke, his voice low and heavy.

“Once you’ve healed, I’ll turn myself in.”

Such a light, easy sentence. It almost made me laugh.

His position in the Family was irreplaceable.

He’d killed two people and walked away without a scratch.

Turn himself in. Right. I didn’t believe a word of it.

Gavin brought in the best medical team money could buy.

The day I was finally recovered, he transferred every asset under his name into mine.

Then, right in front of me, he walked into the police station and turned himself in.

“I did something unforgivable, and I’ll face the consequences.”

“But can I ask you one thing? When I get out-give me a chance. Don’t leave me.”

As they led him away, he looked back at me with desperate, hopeful eyes.

As if my answer alone could give him a reason to survive.

I curved my lips into a cold smile and looked right at him.

“Why should I?”

Every last trace of color left Gavin’s face.
