My Fiancé Delayed Our Marriage for His Girl Best Friend, So I Walked Away Chapter 02

“Oh, speaking of—remember that one game you lost? You promised to let me stab your little girlfriend.”

Rebecca’s gaze slid to me, her eyes full of amusement.

“I wonder if that still counts.”

The blood drained from my face. I looked at Gavin, disbelief written across every feature.

He glanced at Rebecca with a helpless expression but didn’t stop her.

Instead, he turned to me.

“Samantha, it’s just a game. Rebecca’s a med student. She knows what she’s doing.”

Rebecca sauntered toward me, grinning.

Before I could react, the knife in her hand plunged into my side.

The pain whited out my vision.

I used every ounce of strength I had to pull the blade free, and under Rebecca’s stunned gaze, I drove it into her stomach.

Hot blood soaked my hand instantly.

I couldn’t tell if it was hers or mine.

Rebecca collapsed, clutching her wound, screaming.

I stood over her, gasping, and pulled my lips into a smile.

“She knows what she’s doing. I don’t. And I make no promises about restraint.”

Every shred of Gavin’s composure shattered.

He shoved through the crowd, dropping to his knees beside Rebecca, completely lost.

“Call an ambulance!”

He barked the order, then snapped his head up and glared at me. He commanded his men to pin me to the ground.

The hatred in his eyes hit me like a sledgehammer to the chest.

“Samantha, you’re really something. It was a joke—were you actually trying to kill her?”

He saw Rebecca’s wound. He didn’t see mine.

When the ambulance took Rebecca away, Gavin went with her.

Before he left, he threw me one last cold look.

“This isn’t over.”

His men released me. One of them actually sounded sorry. “Miss Samantha, you really stepped on a landmine this time. Gavin’s not going to let this go.”

They scattered like roaches.

The engagement party. My birthday. All of it—ruined.

Blood was still seeping from the wound in my side, soaking through my dress.

I stood alone in that private room for a long time before I finally turned and left.

My phone buzzed with a message.

No name attached, but I knew it was from Rebecca.

[Didn’t he tell you? Three years ago, when I broke up with him, he chased my plane in his car.]

[He hit a family of three on the highway. The daughter survived. Both parents died on impact.]

[Samantha, don’t tell me you’ve forgotten how your own parents died.]

I froze. My mind went blank.

My fingers were shaking as I tried to type a response, but a blaring horn cut through the air.

An out-of-control truck barreled straight toward me.

I threw myself out of the way, but the impact scraped up most of the right side of my body.

The noise around me—the shouting, the chaos—it all blurred into static.

I refused the paramedics and dragged myself back to the Nelson estate, battered and bleeding.

The front door was wide open. Gavin sat on the couch, the ashtray in front of him overflowing with cigarette butts.

He looked up. Those green eyes were cold as ice.

But when he saw the blood covering half my body, something flickered behind them.

I didn’t need to ask. That truck had Gavin’s fingerprints all over it.

“Samantha, you should be grateful Rebecca’s okay.” A long silence passed before he spoke. “You couldn’t even wait one month?”

By then the pain had numbed me. I pulled my lips into a thin smile.

“You and Rebecca really can’t live without each other, can you?”

“A match made in hell.”

Gavin caught the venom in my words and stood up.

He looked me over, head to toe.

“Apologize to Rebecca, and we’ll put this behind us.”

I ignored him. I just turned my phone screen toward his face.

“My parents. Did you kill them?”

Gavin barely glanced at the message.

No panic. No guilt. If anything, he looked justified.
