My Fiancé Delayed Our Marriage for His Girl Best Friend, So I Walked Away Chapter 03

He pushed the phone away.

“The driver who caused the accident is dead. It happened years ago—why are you still hung up on it?”

“Samantha, I’ve given you everything for the past five years. Heart and soul. Everything you have is because of me.”

I knew him too well. If he hadn’t done it, he would have denied it outright.

His evasiveness killed the last flicker of hope in my chest.

Two lives. Two living, breathing human beings.

And in his mouth, they were worth nothing.

He met my reddening eyes and pressed his lips together.

“Stay away from Rebecca. Otherwise, it won’t just be a car accident next time.”

The wedding was postponed.

After we tore into each other, Gavin spent every waking moment glued to Rebecca.

In the group chats, his men started chiming in.

[If you can’t let her go, just get back together already.]

[It’s not like you and Samantha have the marriage certificate yet. You can always swap out the bride.]

These messages felt deliberate—like Gavin wanted them to reach me.

I didn’t have the energy to care.

I started investigating my parents’ deaths.

The car accident five years ago. I was the only survivor.

The doctors said the impact to my head, combined with the trauma, had wiped my memory of the event. All these years, every time I tried to think about it, the pain in my skull became unbearable.

All I remembered was this:

Under the weight of relentless psychological torment, I wanted to die. And then Gavin appeared.

He told me he was my fiance.

That he was the one thing my parents had left behind for me in this world.

“You have to keep living. I’ll be right here with you.”

“When I find the person responsible, I’ll make them pay.”

Gavin’s presence pulled me out of the darkness, piece by piece.

After all these years, I thought I’d made peace with it.

But Rebecca’s words dragged it all back. Every night, I dreamed of my parents’ deaths. Dreamed of them cursing me.

Why are you with the man who killed us?

I drove out to the villa on the outskirts of the city.

After my parents died, their bodies were never cremated or buried.

Gavin knew I’d miss them, so he’d spent a fortune using cutting-edge preservation technology to keep their bodies intact. Whenever I wanted to see them, I could.

Every year on the anniversary, Gavin would come with me.

But this time, something was different. The door to the cold storage unit was standing wide open.

My face went white. I rushed inside. The two perfectly preserved bodies were gone.

A roaring sound filled my head. I spun toward the security guard at the door.

“Where are my parents? Who took them—”

“That would be me.”

Rebecca’s careless voice sent a tremor through my entire body.

She strolled into the storage room hand in hand with Gavin, fingers laced together, not a care in the world.

“I figured the poor things were just sitting here frozen day after day, so I took them off your hands. Helped arrange the funeral.”

“You’re not mad, are you? I was doing you a favor.”

She looked at me with that smug, self-satisfied grin.

I was shaking with rage. The moment I lunged forward, Gavin’s bodyguards grabbed me and held me in place.

“Gavin, those are my parents! Even if there’s going to be a funeral, that’s my decision to make.”

“You murderers.”

Gavin looked at my bloodshot eyes and seemed to hesitate.

“Samantha, the only reason Rebecca isn’t dead is because you missed her vital organs.”

“I had to find a way to make it up to her. I’ve already handed your parents’ remains over to her.”

I wrenched free and grabbed Gavin with trembling hands.

“Why? Those are my parents! If anything happens to them, I swear to God I will make you pay!”

My hysterical sobbing didn’t earn anounce of sympathy from him.

The man who once told me to keep living was gone.

“It’s just one month. Once the penalty period is over, we’ll go get the marriage license.”

“Take some time. Cool off.”

He locked me in a pitch-black basement.
