My Family Heard My Murderous Thoughts, So the Fake Heiress Called 911 Chapter 09

Hailey slid down the door and sat on the floor.

She looked at me, then at Mom and Dad, then at Nolan.

Then she laughed. “So you were scared of her all day. You protected her, avoided her, spent half the night figuring out what to do, and it was all a misunderstanding?”

No one answered.

She looked at me again. “I’ve heard of federal behavioral profilers. So you saw through me from the very

beginning?”

I didn’t answer. My silence was confirmation enough.

She laughed again, tears streaming down her face. “You didn’t come here to reconnect with your birth family. You came to watch a show.”

Gregory finally turned to me, his eyes red.

“Sloane, we… we understand now.”

“What happened today, we were wrong. I thought you were…”

He stopped. He couldn’t bring himself to say the word.

“It’s fine.”

I’d already figured out what they thought I was, and I’d also worked out that they could hear my thoughts.

Besides, profiling an ordinary person was easy for me.

From the moment I first saw my parents and Nolan, I’d noticed that they weren’t exactly happy to have their

biological daughter back.

Nolan in particular seemed wary of me, perhaps afraid I’d take some of the family’s affection away from

Hailey.

But I’d stayed for the day anyway because I needed the rest. I just hadn’t expected to witness all this drama.

Gregory opened his mouth but couldn’t say anything.

He would’ve rather had me yell at him, cry, or tell them I hated them.

He could’ve accepted anything except “It’s fine.”

Someone who was truly hurt, someone who cared about this family, wouldn’t say “It’s fine.”

My phone buzzed. I checked it, then looked at the others.

(Their fear of me was real. So was their guilt. But neither means anything to me now.]

[My new case assignment is here. It’s time for me to leave.]

Gregory’s tears fell. He’d heard that last thought.

Catherine had heard it too. She covered her mouth to keep herself from crying out.

She took two steps toward me but stopped because she knew she had no right to come any closer.

Nolan stood against the wall. He finally looked up and met my eyes.

“You’re leaving?”

“Yeah.” I nodded. “I was supposed to stay here for three days. Command knew I’d found my birth family, so they gave me three days of personal leave.”

“Now the time’s up. My next assignment just came in.”

Catherine finally started crying, one hand covering her mouth as her shoulders shook.

Gregory went over and supported her. His hands were trembling too.

“When are you leaving?” Nolan asked, his voice trembling slightly.

“Now.”

I turned, went upstairs, and started packing.

There wasn’t much to pack. I’d only brought one backpack with me, and I was leaving with the same one.

I stood in the room and looked out the window.

The roses in the rear garden were blooming beautifully. That corner really was perfect for growing roses, not burying bodies.

I revised my earlier professional assessment.

Downstairs, I could hear Catherine crying, Gregory speaking quietly, and Nolan on the phone, probably arranging a car.

Hailey was still sitting in the foyer.

I walked downstairs with my backpack slung over one shoulder.
