My Family Heard My Murderous Thoughts, So the Fake Heiress Called 911 Chapter 07

I watched Hailey cry, looking pitiful, but I knew what she was really crying about.

[She wasn’t crying over losing her family. She was afraid of losing her wealth and privilege.]

Catherine’s expression shifted again. She looked at Hailey’s tears and sighed.

When no one came to comfort her, Hailey said softly, “I was wrong today. I’m sorry.”

Then she turned and went upstairs.

In the middle of the night, I was suddenly awakened by footsteps.

I didn’t move. The footsteps passed my door without stopping.

I waited another thirty seconds, then got up, slipped on my slippers, and walked to the top of the stairs.

The kitchen light was on downstairs.

Hailey stood in front of the cabinets with her back to me, holding a small glass bottle.

She poured out all the pills onto a cutting board and crushed them with the back of a knife. Her technique was clumsy, and some of the powder spilled. She crouched down to pick it up, her hands shaking.

Hailey poured the white powder into a glass of warm milk and stirred it with a spoon.

I leaned against the second-floor railing without making a sound. I guessed the milk was for me.

I’d told the private chef the morning before that I needed a glass of warm milk every day.

Then another light came on.

Catherine stood in the kitchen doorway in her pajamas, her hair down. She didn’t say anything.

Hailey turned around, and the spoon fell from her hand with a clatter.

They stared at each other for five seconds.

“Hailey.” Catherine’s voice was hoarse. “What are you doing?”

Hailey’s hands trembled. She hid them behind her back.

“I-I’m making warm milk for Sloane…”

Catherine walked into the kitchen, bent down, and touched a fingertip to some of the white powder on the

floor.

She held it to her nose and smelled it.

“What is this?”

Hailey opened her mouth, but no sound came out.

Catherine looked at her with sadness in her eyes.

“I raised you for twenty years. I truly never knew you were this kind of person.”

Hailey’s eyes reddened, but the tears didn’t fall. Then she suddenly laughed, her smile looking worse than if

she’d cried.

“You didn’t know? Of course you didn’t. Because you only ever cared about how well I behaved, not who I

really was.”

“I learned when I was little that if I was obedient, you’d praise me. If I was well-behaved, you’d love me

more.”

“But then you were going to bring your biological daughter home. From the day I found out, I knew that no matter how obedient I was, how well-behaved I was, or how much I did, none of it would matter anymore.”

“You don’t want me. You want Sloane.”

Catherine stood in front of her.

“So you think the way we treated you all these years was only because you knew how to put on an act?”

Hailey didn’t answer.

Her silence was answer enough.

Catherine shook her head.

“Hailey, everything you did today, framing Sloane, calling 911, drugging her… I didn’t give up on you because of any of that.”

“I’m disappointed because I finally realized that all the good you’d shown us over the years was an act.”

“You never saw us as family. You only saw us as a safety net.”

“That’s not true!” Hailey cried.

“Then what is it?”

“I…”

“When you framed Sloane, when you called 911, when you put those pills in her milk, did you ever think about how much what you were doing would hurt us?”

“Did you ever think about what would happen to you if what you’d done was discovered?”

Hailey stood there with her mouth open, unable to say a word.

“You didn’t,” Catherine answered for her. “All you thought about was yourself.”

This time, Hailey’s tears finally fell.
