My Family Faked the Apocalypse and Watched Me Die Chapter 05

“What?”

Ryan, Ethan, and Owen froze. Confusion and disbelief spread across their faces.

Ethan was the first to react,

He forced down the panic fising inside him and shouted,

“That’s impossible!”

“She’s way too selfish to die! She finally got to enjoy the Bennett family’s wealth!”

A flicker of delight flashed through Chloe’s eyes. She quickly grabbed Ryan’s sleeve.

“Ryan. If Evelyn is really dead, who made those posts online to frame me?”

“This has to be fake! It’s a trick!”

Ryan slowly clenched his fists.

The fear and guilt in his eyes disappeared. Coldness took their place.

He looked at the officers with open ridicule.

“Did Evelyn hire you?”

“What? Just because we tricked her with that fake apocalypse, now she’s pretending to be dead to get

revenge?”

“Tell her to stop hiding! If she doesn’t come out and apologize today, she can forget about ever being Mrs. Mercer again!”

Even Owen glared at the police angrily. He raised his tiny fist.

“Evelyn Bennett is a liar! I hate her!”

The four of them argued over one another. Not a single person believed the police.

It wasn’t until handcuffs clicked around their wrists and they were escorted to the Ashcroft Police Department that Ryan, Ethan, and Owen finally realized…

Something was terribly wrong.

Inside the interrogation room, Ethan’s face was filled with panic. Ryan had gone deathly pale.

Completely confused, Owen tugged on Chloe’s sleeve. His voice trembled.

“Mommy Chloe… what happened to Mommy?”

Before anyone could answer, an officer placed a document on the table.

“This is Miss Evelyn Bennett’s autopsy report.”

Those words hit Ryan like a thunderbolt. A sharp ringing filled his ears.

He stared at the report on the table.

His mouth opened. But no sound came out. Fear swallowed him whole.

Ethan snatched the report away. His face was twisted with anger.

“Impossible! You’re still lying to me! She’s not dead-”

His voice stopped abruptly. His fingers tightened around the report.

His pupils contracted violently as he stared at the photograph on the first page.

There I was. Collapsed in a pool of blood inside the basement.

My face was deathly pale. Yet a faint smile lingered on my lips.

Because I’d believed that if I died, my husband and my son would have one better chance to survive.

I had thought death would finally bring them hope.

So… I smiled.

But they had all betrayed me.

I floated quietly above them. Watching Ethan’s eyes slowly redden.

A broken sob escaped his throat.

“No… this isn’t real…”

“The blood was fake… Chloe said it was fake… Owen saw it too…”

The officer frowned. His expression hardened.

“Mr. Bennett. Are you questioning the professionalism of the Ashcroft Police Department’s medical

examiner?”

Ethan fell silent. Despair slowly filled his eyes.

Ryan’s hands shook uncontrollably as he took the report from Ethan.

He only turned one page.

Then, his breath stopped.
