Five years later, over Memorial Day weekend, Adrian and I brought our son back to New York to visit my family’s graves.

After we visited my parents and Grandma, I arranged to meet Maya and her family for a small get-together.

She was helping me prepare the sushi we were going to eat later while catching me up on gossip.

“By the way, do you know what happened to Julian?”

Hearing that name again felt like something from another lifetime.

I asked, “What happened to him?”

Maya sighed.

“Two years ago, he took a case pro bono.”

“He represented a young girl whose parents had been killed by a spoiled trust-fund heir.”

“He won in the end, but he offended that rich heir’s family.”

“Later, they retaliated. He was beaten until he was paralyzed from the waist down.”

“He still uses a wheelchair now.”

I lowered my head and kept slicing the eel.

“At least he finally did one decent thing.”

Maya glanced at me and said softly, “I visited him a while ago.”

“He said he doesn’t regret it.”

“He also said he regrets not helping you back then.”

“Now, he just wants to make up for the mistakes he made.”

After hearing that, nothing stirred in my heart.

Some wounds could not be erased by one sentence of regret.

Just then, my son suddenly shouted in his sweet, childish voice from not far away.

“Mommy! Daddy is cheating at cards again! Come help me!”

When I turned around, I saw Adrian leaning against the stone table.

After hearing our son complain, he still looked perfectly justified.

“What’s the point of telling on me to her?”

“My wife is obviously on my side.”

“Then go get a wife of your own.”

Caught between laughter and exasperation, I walked over and flicked Adrian on the forehead.

“Stop teaching him nonsense.”

Adrian took the opportunity to wrap his arms around me like an oversized golden retriever begging for attention.

“Our son will have his own wife one day. He’ll leave you.”

He leaned in and kissed my cheek.

Our son immediately protested, rushing over to wrap his arms around my other arm.

“Don’t listen to him! I’ll love Mommy forever too!”

The two of them gave me such a headache.

Sunlight filtered down through the leaves.

The breeze was gentle.

The weather was beautiful.
