“Cancel my appointment,” I told the receptionist. “I’ll find another law firm.”

I turned to leave.

Behind me, Julian’s mocking voice rang out.

“What’s wrong? Can’t keep up the act anymore?”

My steps faltered.

I had not wanted to bother with him.

But in that instant, anger shot through me anyway.

I turned around and looked him straight in the eye.

“My husband is planning to transfer every asset under his name to me.”

“I’m here to consult someone about the legal issues involved.”

“What does that have to do with you, as my ex-boyfriend?”

Julian let out a soft scoff, as if he had just heard a joke.

“Nora, if you’re going to lie, at least use your brain first.”

“Do you even believe something that ridiculous yourself?”

One of my former college classmates, who also worked at his firm, smiled and piled on.

“So renting a car and hiring an actor to play along is enough to rebrand yourself as some high-society wife now?”

Low laughter immediately rose around us.

“She scared me for a second. I almost thought she had actually married well.”

“Maybe she just found some older guy with a little money.”

I was trembling with rage.

Just as I was about to speak, a sharp female voice rang out.

“Nora!”

The sound of high heels rushed toward me.

The next second, a slap landed hard across my face.

The sharp crack echoed through the room.

My head snapped to the side, and my ears rang.

Sophia charged up to me with red eyes and grabbed my collar in a death grip.

“How do you still have the nerve to come looking for Julian?”

“We’re already engaged. Why are you still haunting us?”

When I came back to my senses, I raised my hand to slap her back.

But someone seized my wrist.

A familiar cool, woody scent swept over me.

It was Julian.

He frowned, his voice low.

“Nora, stop making a scene.”

I almost could not believe what I had just heard.

I was the one who had been hit.

Yet I was also the one he stopped.

When Sophia saw that, a smug glint flashed in her eyes.

The next second, she suddenly lunged forward and grabbed a fistful of my hair.

“Do you have no shame at all?”

“You clung to Julian every single day back in college!”

“You knew I grew up with him, but you still forced your way between us!”

“Now, after all these years, you actually followed him to his firm?”

Her sharp nails scraped across my face.

Several more slaps cracked across my face, one after another.

The people around us erupted.

“Oh my God. How can someone be this terrifying?”

“It’s been years, and she’s still harassing Mr. Shaw?”

“Poor future Mrs. Shaw.”

Someone had even taken out a phone and started recording, the camera almost shoved into my face.

“Make sure you get her face.”

“You don’t see a homewrecker showing up at a law firm to harass someone every day.”

“I heard she was the one chasing Mr. Shaw back in college too.”

“Guess being a desperate simp really does leave you with nothing.”

The voices around me crashed over me like a tide.

My scalp burned from being yanked so hard, and I was so battered and disheveled that I could barely stay on my feet.

Julian stood there the entire time.

He never pulled Sophia away.

When Sophia finally got tired, she threw herself into his arms and sobbed like a helpless victim.

“Julian, I’m so scared.”

“Is she trying to steal you back from me?”

The people around us immediately began comforting her.

“Don’t worry, future Mrs. Shaw. Mr. Shaw would never be interested in a woman like her.”

“Exactly. Everyone knows you and Mr. Shaw grew up together. You’re the one he spoils the most.”

“Some people really do think they can punch way above their league.”

I suddenly wanted to laugh.

Five years ago, when Sophia hit and killed my mother, Julian had been exactly like this too.

He had stood across from me and protected Sophia.

As if I were the one who had done everything wrong.

I should have been used to it by then.

Julian looked down at me from above and spoke as if he were granting me mercy.

“Nora, if you apologize now and promise not to lie or cause trouble again, I can help clean this up for you.”

I stared at him blankly.

It all felt absurd.

I had not lied. I had not harassed anyone. I had not caused trouble.

What gave him the right to dismiss me like I was some beggar waiting for his charity?

I laughed, though my eyes burned red.

“Julian, you disgust me.”

I raised my hand and slapped him hard across the face.
