Julian started texting me every single day.

Sometimes it was a photo of his plain set catering meal: “Today’s lunch is basically cardboard.”

Sometimes it was a photo of a lonely streetlamp late at night: “Goodnight, partner.”

I replied to every text. Sometimes quickly, other times hours later when I was caught up in writing.

He never pressed, but whenever I did reply, he always texted back within seconds.

One evening, he sent a photo of a beautifully plated steak at a high-end restaurant.

I zoomed in and noticed his hand at the edge of the frame. There was a fresh, red scratch across his knuckles.

[What happened to your hand?]

He immediately sent a voice note, and I tapped play:

“Got caught on some branches while walking in the woods. It hurts.”

A small smile slipped onto my face, but then a realization hit me.

I accepted. The lighting on his end was dim, and Julian was leaning against a tree trunk, his face flushed and his mask pulled down to his chin. His voice was incredibly hoarse: “Hey, partner. I think I have a fever.”

“If you have a fever, why are you still outside?” I frowned.

He gave a tired, helpless smile:

“It’s late. I didn’t want to wake anyone up to go buy me medicine.”

“Where are you?”

He named a public park nearby.

I cut the call and immediately grabbed my coat.

It was only after I ran out of my building that I realized I had forgotten to take my own stomach medication.
