“I was just too jealous that she had your protection. I made a mistake because I liked you. You can’t walk away from me.” 

“If you hadn’t made me think I could bully her, I never 

would’ve done any of this. So in the end, you’re partly 

responsible too.” 

Ethan’s face stiffened. 

He shoved Chloe away. 

“Shut up. Your mind is rotten. What does that have to do with 

me? Is every person you like supposed to pay for your 

mistakes?” 

“You brought all of this on yourself.” 

His face flushed as he turned toward me, trying to explain. 

Michael stepped in front of me. 

“Enough. I don’t care about the mess between you two. All I care about is that the law gives my niece the protection and justice she deserves.” 

“She thought she could hurt Avery because Avery’s family wasn’t nearby. Now she’s only scared because she got caught.” 

“If she had the chance to do it again, she would do the same thing. Someone like that doesn’t deserve sympathy.” 

With that, he put an arm around my shoulders and led me 

away. 

Behind us, cries and pleas filled the precinct. 

Ethan grabbed my arm. “Where are you going with him?” 

1 frowned and pulled free. “To London for school.” 

His voice rose, and the veins in his forehead stood out. 

“I don’t agree. You can’t go.” 

“I know you’re leaving because I hurt you for someone else and disappointed you, but this decision has too many outside factors. It isn’t what you truly want.” 

“And he hasn’t seen you in years. Your mother is gone. Who knows if he’s taking advantage of your grief to use you for something? You may not be safe with him. You need to think clearly.” 

“From now on, I swear I will never hurt you for anyone again. Give me another chance. Give me another chance. Give us 

another chance.” 

“You trained for so many years. How can you just give it up? Avery, I’m begging you. Don’t go.” 

By the end, there was pleading in his eyes. 

But it was too late. 

Nothing in me moved anymore. 

I took the matching phone charm he had given me off my phone and threw it to him. 

“What my uncle said to Chloe, I’ll say to you now.” 

“You only regret it because you know the truth. But if you had 

the chance to go back, you would make the same choice.” 

“Ethan, there is no place for you in my future.” 

“I thought this through. Over these past few nights, I couldn’t 

find a single reason to start over with you.” 

“The girl I used to be might have forgiven you. The woman I am now won’t. And you have no right to judge my family now.” 

“From now on, we can be ordinary classmates. That is the best relationship between us that I can accept.” 

The wind blew the charm away. 

He hurried to pick it up. 

By the time he looked up again, I was already in the car. 

His eyes red, he chased after us. 

It was as if, as long as he had not looked into my eyes when I said those words, he could pretend he had never heard them. 

As if they didn’t count, as if I had never said them at all. 

Self–deception had always come easily to him. 

He pounded on the window, shaking his head hard. 

His screamed “no” reached me faintly through the glass. 

He chased the car until it was moving too fast for him to keep up. 

His sweaty handprints smeared across the window. 

His steps slowed. 

The boy who had once run so effortlessly, who had pulled me and dragged me and pushed me toward the finish line, collapsed while trying to chase me. 

In the rearview mirror, he looked like a helpless boy, slamming his fists against the ground and roaring at his own weakness. 

But none of it had anything to do with me anymore. 

From that day on, my life would no longer have him in it.
