“That’s what this bitch told you?” Tyler snapped. “Damn. If she hadn’t told us Avery had no parents, no family, and nobody to back her up, why would we bother kidnapping her?” 

“Don’t play innocent with me. Where was that act when you were hooking up with me and begging me to teach Avery and half the school a lesson?” 

“Now you’re dumping all the blame on me? Dream on. I’ve got plenty of videos and recordings. Every time you begged me to go after someone, every name, every grade, every target, it’s all clear.” 

“You thought because you went to a good school, people like us were too stupid to protect ourselves?” 

“I’ll tell you the truth. I already showed the cops the videos. 

They were trying to protect your dignity, but if you don’t care 

about having any, don’t blame me for talking.” 

In that instant, Chloe collapsed to the floor. 

“You’re lying. You’re slandering me. This is illegal. You-” 

Then she turned to Ethan, who stood there completely 

stunned. 

She grabbed his sleeve with shaking hands, her face streaked 

with tears. 

“No, Ethan. They’re lying. They’re trying to ruin me because 

they couldn’t have me. I really didn’t do any of that.” 

Ethan looked at her like he barely recognized her. 

He opened his mouth, but before he could say anything, the 

police called him in to give a statement. 

More than ten minutes later, he came out in a daze. 

His eyes were bloodshot as he looked at Chloe, who was still 

trembling. 

“You really are vicious. I hurt the person who stayed by my side for eighteen years because of someone like you.” 

“I told the police the truth about the qualifier too. Chloe, you don’t deserve any of this.” 

Chloe’s muddied eyes turned red with rage. 

“Why? Why would you say that? That was the last thing I had. 

I can’t miss college. You’re ruining my future.” 

“What good does this do you? You’ll be dragged into it too. 

Ethan, you can’t destroy me. I’m begging you.” 

Ethan ignored her and walked toward me. 

Then he dropped to his knees. 

“I’m sorry. I really didn’t know she was this cruel.” 

“She fooled me. I hurt you and let you suffer because of her. 

I’m a terrible person, but I swear I never meant to really hurt 

you.” 

“Avery, I was wrong. I know I was wrong. Can you forgive 

me?” 

So this was what he looked like on his knees. 

Once, he had asked me what my ideal proposal looked like. 

I told him the ceremony mattered. 

Flowers, a ring, one knee on the ground, and a promise spoken 

with care. 

Not one could be missing. 

I had imagined that scene countless times. 

But I had never imagined that one day, he would kneel in front of me not to give our unspoken love the ending I had once 

dreamed of, but to apologize from the far side of the damage 

he had caused. 

The version of him I had built in my head shattered. 

He was no different from all the cheating, disloyal men I used 

to think he would never become. 

I said nothing. 

Michael pushed him away. 

After a while, the police informed us of the preliminary result. 

Chloe was eighteen, so she could face criminal charges and 

civil liability as an adult. 

She would be held responsible as the person behind the 

kidnapping. 

Most likely, she would be detained and eventually sentenced. 

As for Tyler and the others, they were repeat offenders, and they would also be taken into custody. 

The moment Chloe heard the result, her legs gave out. 

She crawled to me, crying so hard her voice broke. 

“Avery, I was wrong. I don’t want to go to jail. I’m still so young. I can’t have a criminal record. Please give me one chance. Let me go, okay?” 

“I’ll never do it again. If you ask the prosecutor for leniency, 

I’ll do anything you want. Please.” 

I frowned and pulled my pant leg out of her grip. 

She turned her pleading eyes on Ethan. 

“Ethan, please say something for me. I didn’t mean it. I did all 

of this because of you.”
