Soon enough, the next Saturday rolled around.

Gavin went out of his way to book my flight to Glenhaven for the art exhibit.

He hugged me tight at the airport, gaze soft.

“Baby, you’ve been looking forward to this exhibit for ages. Enjoy your day off in Glenhaven. Take all the time for yourself.”

I met his affectionate gaze, suppressing the coldness in my eyes, and smiled as I took the boarding pass.

As soon as I dropped my suitcase in my Glenhaven hotel room, my phone buzzed insistently.

A notification popped up from my smart security system:

[Alert: Motion detected inside your old family home.]

My heart sank.

That old house held every memory of my late mother.

I rarely stayed there, and I’d installed motion sensors to keep track of anyone entering the property.

Gavin knew nothing about them.

My fingers trembled as I pulled up the live feed.

In an instant, I realized Gavin wasn’t working overtime at the office like he’d claimed.

He’d brought Lorelei straight into my mother’s house.

Lorelei lounged lazily on my mother’s favorite rosewood sofa, holding up her wrist to admire it under the crystal chandelier.

Wrapped around her wrist was a valuable antique bangle.

It was my mother’s heirloom, left to me years ago.

I’d kept it safely inside the home safe.

Gavin had opened the safe and put it on another woman’s wrist.

“This bangle is gorgeous, just a little dated,” Lorelei pouted sweetly.

“Who cares if it’s old? It looks stunning on you. Once I get her to give up that penthouse, all her jewelry is yours.”

Gavin laughed softly as he leaned closer to her.

And hanging directly on the wall in front of them was my mother’s portrait, her face watching over the room.

Through the screen, their laughter and teasing voices left me shaken.

They were carrying on shamelessly in front of my mother’s portrait.

I clutched my phone so tightly my knuckles whitened.

All the affection and hesitation I’d been holding onto disappeared.

I’d considered ending things quietly.

That hope vanished right then.

I closed the security feed and called my lawyer immediately.

“Freeze access to my personal accounts, sever every business connection I have to Gavin. Also draft a separation agreement for me. I need it tomorrow.”

After hanging up, I switched to Messages and messaged Cedric.

[Mr. Parker, how serious is the funding gap at Gavin’s company?]

Cedric replied right away:

[Things are getting serious. He’s been scrambling to keep the company afloat.]

My fingers flew across the screen:

[Then make sure he can no longer rely on my connections. I’m done supporting his company.]

He paused for two seconds, then sent one single word:

[Done.]

Gavin thought he was brilliant, that his company’s success came from his own talent.

He never knew how many of the capital connections and core clients came through relationships I’d spent years building for him.

Now I was finally taking those connections back.

At ten that night, my phone lit up again.

A message from Gavin.

[Baby, your Saturday break is over! Tomorrow’s my birthday. You promised me a huge surprise, don’t break your promise.]

I stared at the bright heart emoji beside his message, a cold smile tugging at my lips.
