My Boyfriend’s Weekly Day Off Was For My Best Friend Chapter 02

My Boyfriend’s Weekly Day Off Was For My Best Friend Chapter 02

Gavin held me tighter, resting his chin against my shoulder.

“It’s not hard at all. As long as it makes you happy, staying alone is the least I can do.”

He leaned closer and smiled with tender concern.

Back in college, when I was seriously ill, he’d stayed by my side for days, refusing to leave me alone.

He’d said, “Nadine, I didn’t dare leave your side. I was terrified you’d wake up and I wouldn’t be there.”

Once I thought that was love rooted deep in his heart.

Now I knew it was a flawless performance.

Three days later came the company annual gala.

Gavin stepped up to the podium as General Manager to deliver his speech.

When he talked about the year’s flagship project, he suddenly shifted gears.

“I want to give special thanks for this project to Lorelei.”

Every head in the room snapped toward her.

I stood right in front of the stage, my grip tightening around my glass.

I’d worked for months to secure this project.

Lorelei had nothing to do with it.

Gavin looked straight at me, strode down from the stage, and took my hand in front of everyone, his voice warm and full of concern.

“Nadine, you pushed yourself so hard on this project. As your boyfriend, it worries me.”

“So I’ve decided to transfer full oversight of the project to Lorelei. I’m giving you time off. Rest. You’ve done enough.”

Lorelei glided over and slipped her arm through mine.

“Yeah, Nadine, even a strong woman has to learn to delegate. You take on too much. I’ll take some of this load off your shoulders. Don’t make Gavin worry about you anymore.”

The room erupted in applause and cheers.

“Mr. Judd is such a perfect boyfriend!”

“Where do you even find a best friend like Lorelei? Total dream.”

Everyone was saying how lucky I was.

I stared at the picture-perfect pair standing before me, and all I felt was bitter irony.

But I smiled.

I smiled like I was moved and overjoyed.

I even raised my glass and toasted them both.

“Then I’ll leave this in your capable hands.”

After sitting back down, I pulled out my phone and opened a chat with a contact with a blank black avatar.

Cedric Parker, the legendary venture capitalist from Bethel—the top-tier investor Gavin had spent years trying to meet.

I typed:

[Mr. Parker, is that partnership you mentioned still on the table?]

He replied instantly:

[Whenever you’re ready.]

Once the party wrapped up, Gavin said he needed to drive a client home and told Lorelei to grab something from the car first.

I realized I’d left my purse at the table and headed back to the underground parking garage.

Then I froze.

The car window was rolled halfway down.

Lorelei wasn’t fetching anything.

She and Gavin were sitting close together in the backseat.

She laughed softly.

“She didn’t even put up a fight when you took the project away from her. What a fool.”

Gavin chuckled, his tone smug.

“She’s completely convinced I’m doing this for her.”

“Next Saturday on her day off, I’m getting the keys to that downtown luxury penthouse. Great natural light. It’ll be our future home someday.”
