My Boyfriend Never Really Blocked His Ex Chapter 06

The night before the engagement, Nathan met his buddies for drinks.

They saw him walk in alone. “Where’s the bride-to-be?”

Nathan’s eyes softened. “She’s getting her beauty sleep. Big day tomorrow.”

“Tying the knot that fast, huh?” His friends teased.

“Honestly, we had bets on you and Vanessa getting back together. You two bickered nonstop since you were kids, and dated for seven years—you were a mess, but you were our mess.”

Nathan shook his head. A tired, bitter laugh.

“Shipping every pairing will only set you up for disappointment. Vanessa and I ended ugly. It’s dead.”

“She only acts out because she’s too proud to say she wants you back.”

“I’ll pass, thanks all the same.”

Nathan waved the thought away, drained his glass in one go, and looked genuinely at peace. “Dating Lena was the best decision I’ve ever made.”

“Honestly, before her, I thought I’d sworn off women entirely.”

He scanned the table, a smug grin on his face. “Lena’s a hundred times better. I’d have to be insane to miss…”

The door slammed open.

Vanessa showed up late, having heard every single word of what he’d just said.

She grabbed an empty wine glass from the table and slammed it to the floor, sending shards of glass flying everywhere.

“What the hell are you implying, Nathan?!”

Her hands were on her hips. Her perfectly done makeup was warped by fury.

“Like I even want you back! Don’t you forget who was groveling at my feet, begging me to date you? I got bored and dumped your ass! No way in hell I’d get back together with you!”

Nathan watched her tantrum with dead eyes. A sarcastic smirk played on his lips.

“Yeah? Then stop coming to my place and cutting the power.”

“All you do is throw fits and whine. “Those years with you? Biggest regret of my life.”

“So what if I’m high maintenance?” Vanessa stepped up, nose to nose with him. “You were the one begging to treat me like royalty!”

His friends stepped between them like it was a reflex.

“Come on, you broke up years ago. Stop going at each other like enemies.”

“Easy, Nate. Don’t let her scratch your face up again before tomorrow’s big day.”

Nathan pulled back, brushed off his wrinkled sleeve, and shot a final cold glare over the crowd.

“Tomorrow’s my engagement party. Don’t you dare show up.”

Vanessa shoved his buddy’s hand off her shoulder, eyes blazing.

“I’m doing whatever I want! Your mom sent me an invite anyway.”

Furious, Nathan grabbed his jacket. “You guys keep drinking. I’m heading out.”
