My Boyfriend Never Really Blocked His Ex Chapter 01

Once Nathan Holloway and I got together, he blocked his ex Vanessa Corbin on every single app.

But every time she got drunk, she’d drive over to our gated community and flip off the main breaker, cutting the power so he’d have to come downstairs.

The two had been bitter rivals ever since they dated—they couldn’t exchange two sentences without tearing into each other, insults flying sharper by the second.

I’d gotten used to it.

But this time, the usual screaming match escalated. She jumped on him, fists flying, throwing punches like she meant it.

Furious, I rushed over to yank her off him, and got a slap across the face for my trouble.

I was about to swing back when Nathan caught my wrist, his grip like iron.

He hauled Vanessa to her feet, and for a split second, his eyes flooded with concern—raw, tender worry that I recognized far too late.

“You okay? Did you hurt yourself?”

Then he turned to me. The softness vanished.

“She’s drunk! Why the hell did you push her?”

I just stood there, staring at him numbly.

Letting another woman cling to him, scream in his face, make a scene.

And it hit me.

When a man says he hates an ex? That ex is the one he never got over.

—

Nathan and Vanessa had been on and off for seven years. The breakup was ugly.

I’d lived with Nathan for three years. Vanessa had been causing trouble nonstop for all three years.

First, she made a copy of the spare key in while he was at work, taking the dog they’d raised together.

Nathan tracked her for three days before he got the dog back from a run-down rental in the suburbs.

Then she planted a tracking device under his car. Every time we drove anywhere, the GPS would loop the sappy voice memo he’d recorded to confess to her years ago.

And after that, every time she tied one on, she’d show up and cut the power just to force him outside.

Call it love. Call it war. It was the same thing.

Nathan always swore up and down he was done with her. He’d grit his teeth and promise they were through forever.

But he never actually did a damn thing about it.

This time, I was the one who got hit.

And she was still clinging to him relentlessly, sobbing pitifully like a wounded innocent.

Nathan wouldn’t even look at me, let alone ask if I was hurt.

He just pulled her into his chest, murmuring soft, soothing words into her hair.

“It’s okay. I’m here. Shh.”

“I hate you so much, Nathan!”

Vanessa clawed at him, bit at his shoulder, playing the drunk card for all it was worth.

Nathan had a thing about germs. A serious thing.

He hated skin-to-skin contact. Every time I leaned in for a kiss, he’d turn his head.

He’d turn his head away, frowning. “Lena, come on. It’s unhygienic.”

But now?

She had her arms locked around his neck. Her wet, sloppy kisses landed on his cheek, his neck, the corner of his mouth.

The smacking sound was sickeningly loud.

And he didn’t pull back.

When she bit down on his Adam’s apple, he just let out a low grunt and tightened his arms around her.

“Lena. She’s just had too much. Don’t take it personally.”

He finally threw me a bone.

“Go back inside. I’m taking her home.”

With that, he lifted her into his arms bridal-style and turned to leave.

Vanessa’s head lolled on his shoulder. Her eyes had been closed a second ago.

Now they snapped open.

There wasn’t a drop of drunkenness in them. Only pure, smug victory.

She looked at me over his shoulder and curled her lips into a tiny, wicked smile.

See? I win again.

I watched Nathan’s back fade into the dark.

Weird. The glow around him was gone.

I’d kept trying to convince myself that he hated Vanessa. That she was just a crazy ex he couldn’t shake.

But right then, watching him carry her away, I finally got it.

His thing for her wasn’t in his head.

It was in his bones. In his cells.

And it would always beat logic.
