Derek lunged for me, but someone at my side stepped in and blocked him.

“Elara, please, just let me explain.”

“I’ll apologize. I’ll even apologize to your grandfather-write him a formal letter, whatever it takes.”

“Just don’t be mad. I’ll do anything.”

I met his eyes without any reaction.

“How do you know about my grandfather?”

He froze. “It’s all over the company. Everyone knows the Soraya Group chairman is your grandfather.”

“Elara, we’ve been together for five years.”

“Are you really going to throw all of that away?”

“I admit I made mistakes, but there’s nothing between Mira and me. You have to believe me.’

I met his eyes.

“The night my fever hit 103, you were in her bed. That’s ‘nothing’ to you?”

The color drained from his face.

“How… how do you know that?”

“You forgot? I understood every word you two said in Spanish at dinner.”

He went completely still.

I went on. “You said I couldn’t live without you.”

“You said the house had just been bought, and having me help with the down payment and expenses made

life easier.”

“You said I was easy-that all you had to do was sweet-talk me and I’d fall back in line.”

With every word, his face went paler.

People had already gathered outside the office. Whispers spread through the hallway.

Derek finally recovered enough to put on a wounded expression.

“Elara, those were just jokes.”

“You know how Mira and I are. We mess around.”

“Sometimes the jokes get a little crude, that’s all. Don’t take it to heart.”

“You’re the one I love. Haven’t I treated you well these past five years?”

The same script. The same excuses.

Once, I would have believed him. Now they only made me laugh.

“Treated me well?”

“You peeled plate after plate of shrimp for Mira. Have you ever peeled one for me?”

“When I had that fever, I called you eleven times. You finally picked up on the twelfth.”

“And you told me to drink some water and stay bundled up.”

“When I was in the hospital, you swore you’d stay with me. Instead, you took Mira to a concert.”

“Derek, the only thing you were ever good at was making promises you never meant to keep.”

He stood there speechless.

Someone nearby couldn’t hold back any longer.

“Mr. Holloway, that’s seriously messed up.”

“Yeah. She gave you everything.”

The crowd erupted into quiet murmurs.

Humiliation curdled into rage. Derek snapped.

“Elara, quit playing the victim. You lied to me too!”

“You hid who you really were from everyone. Played the ordinary girl. Pretended you didn’t know a thing.”

“People like you are the scary ones.

“You played dumb the whole time.”

I looked at him calmly.

“I never lied to you. You just never cared enough to know me.”

“Five years together, and you don’t even know how many languages I speak.”

His lips moved, but no sound came.

Just then, Mira came running over in tears.

“Derek! The company’s firing me! Are you going to do something or not?”

He shoved her aside, irritated.

“Is this really the time for that?”

She stumbled backward, staring at him in disbelief.

“What do you mean? You promised you wouldn’t walk away from this!”

“helped you with clients. I stayed late with you. That night happened because you begged me!”

“And now that everything’s falling apart, you’re dumping me?”

Derek’s face went pale.

“Mira, shut the hell up!”

The two of them started screaming at each other right there in front of everyone.

I stepped aside and watched the show.

Jasper leaned closer. “Miss Vance, shall we go?”

I nodded. As I turned to go, I heard Mira shriek behind me.

“Derek, don’t forget it! I paid for half that down payment too!”

I stopped. Just for a second.

The house Derek had promised to add my name to. I’d paid for half the down payment. The other half came

from Mira.

From beginning to end, Derek hadn’t paid a dime.
