My Birth Parents and Husband Chose the Adopted Daughter, So I Vanished Chapter 05

Outside the warehouse, Adrian stared into the flames, motionless for several seconds.

My mother was the first to scream.

“Evelyn’s still inside!”

Adrian’s arms went slack, and Serena slipped from his hold and slumped to the ground.

He turned and charged towards the burning warehouse.

“Get her out!”

His underboss, Grant Cole, rushed forwards with several men and blocked his path.

“Don, you can’t go in! There are accelerants all round the warehouse. It could go up again any

second.”

Adrian punched him in the face.

“No! I checked the place before I came. It’s just a disused warehouse at the Brooklyn Navy Yard!”

Grant wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth.

“We’ve just had new intel…”

Before he could finish, Serena stepped between them.

Her face was pale, but her gaze darted over everyone around them.

“Adrian, you can’t seriously believe this. How many times has she threatened to kill herself now?

Has she ever actually gone through with it?”

“She set up today’s kidnapping herself, so of course she planted the accelerants. She wanted to

force you to choose between us. The explosion’s just her way of making you regret choosing me.”

She reached out and grabbed Adrian’s arm.

“And I heard one of the kidnappers say there was a back way out. She’ll be long gone by now.”

My father, Richard, scowled as well.

“Serena’s right. Evelyn always pulls stunts like this to make people prove they love her. She wasn’t

raised in the Family. She doesn’t understand the one thing the Family won’t tolerate. All she knows

how to do is make a scene and emotionally blackmail people.”

My mother added, “When she comes back, send her out of New York for a while. If she stays at the

Moretti estate, she’ll only make us a laughing stock in front of the capos.”

Adrian stood there in silence.

As he listened to them, he slowly began convincing himself that Evelyn couldn’t really be dead.

Then, unbelievably, he smiled..

“Exactly. She loves me enough to throw her life away. That’s how I know she’d never truly leave

me.”

He looked at Serena.

There was even a trace of helplessness in his voice

“Our arrangement still stands. When the baby’s born, Evelyn goes down as the mother. Her health’s

been ruined these past few years. She might not be able to have another child.”

“This baby is how I’ll make it up to her. After that, I’ll send you to Europe for a while. As long as I’m

Don, the Moretti Family will look after you.”

Serena lowered her head and nodded obediently.

But the moment she turned away, a cold smile appeared at the corner of her lips.

Evelyn had already been blown to ashes. And he still thought he could register the baby as hers?

By the time they returned to the Moretti estate, black sedans filled the driveway outside.

Several important capos, lawyers, and representatives from allied Families had already arrived.

Grant was the first to step forwards.

His expression was unusually grave.

“Don… I’m sorry.”

Adrian’s face instantly turned cold.

“What did you just say?”

Grant met his gaze without flinching.

“Mrs Moretti’s death notice has already been issued. We were told she died in the explosion at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. St Patrick’s Cathedral has been contacted about a memorial Mass.

Everyone’s here to pay their respects.”

Adrian stared at him as though he were looking at a madman.

“Who gave you the right to say she’s dead?”

Grant’s voice dropped.

“Don, this didn’t come from us. The notice went out through your internal system an hour ago. There was a list of her belongings attached.”
