With the System breathing down my neck about the deadline every day, half a year passed before Ethan finally slipped an engagement ring onto my finger.

No fancy ceremony. Just a thick asset transfer agreement and a perfectly sized diamond.

Of course, the only thing that hit the floor before Ethan’s knees was the System’s tears.

Life after marriage wasn’t much different.

Ethan had probably just swapped the trackers for subtler forms of possessiveness. He still loved seeing me wear the clothes he bought, eat the food he cooked, and spend his money.

He was still clingy, just swapped “cat-snuggling” for legitimate hugs and kisses.

One weekend morning.

A notification chimed in my head: rewards disbursed.

Then it was gone, and my head fell silent.

That night, Ethan came out of the shower, hair still dripping, and saw me curled up on the sofa scrolling through my phone.

He walked over and looked down at me.

I looked up at him.

He reached out, like he’d been holding back forever, and scooped me into his arms, burying his face in my hair and breathing in deep.

My eyes widened, and I squirmed and bit him without thinking.

He froze, instinctively grabbed the back of my neck, and started to say, “Bad—”

I said, “You were going to say what?”

He immediately corrected himself. “—bad habit. No need to change.”

Then Ethan laughed, leaning down until his nose brushed against my cheek.

In the dim light, his voice was low and warm.

“Genius kitten is all mine.”
