My Billionaire Built An Empire For Me Then Broke My Face For Her Chapter 09

About ten feet away, a man stood watching us.

He had sharp, striking features with high brow bones and a straight nose. His lips were thin and pale, framing eyes of an impossibly dark black. Right now, his gaze was fixed squarely on Julian’s hand gripping my wrist.

Julian instinctively let go, then glared at the stranger with obvious irritation. “Who the hell are you?”

The man’s eyes shifted from Julian’s hand to my face. “Evelyn?”

I nodded.

Without missing a beat, he stepped up beside me and took the handle of my suitcase. “I’m John Dupont.”

Julian’s pupils contracted in shock. “John Dupont? As in the heir to the Dupont family?”

The Duponts were old-money aristocracy, an established dynasty far beyond the reach of new-money entertainment moguls like Julian’s family. He was clearly intimidated. But when he saw how comfortably close John and I seemed, jealousy pushed him forward again.

“John, she is my girlfriend. You can’t just take her away.”

John looked up, a faint, mocking smile playing on his lips. “Girlfriend? She is my fiancée.”

“Fiancée?”

Julian froze, looking as though he’d been struck by lightning. He

stared at me in utter disbelief, but seeing no denial in my expression,
his face cycled through shades of pale and livid.

He let out a cold, bitter laugh. “Evelyn, so you’ve hitched your wagon
to the Dupont family. No wonder you had the cash to pay off that
thirty-million-dollar breach-of-contract settlement.”

I looked at him evenly. “What did you just say?”

“You know exactly what I said!” Julian snapped. “How did I not realize
you were such a gold digger? I actually thought you were different.”
He sneered. “What, do you really think he’s going to marry you?”

Losing all restraint, Julian spat venomously, “So what if you’re an
Oscar-winning actress? In high society, you’re nothing but a
plaything!”

Turning his mockery toward John, he added, “Tell me, John, your
taste isn’t exactly stellar, is it? Picking up a woman I’ve already grown
bored of.”

Before anyone could blink, John smoothly intercepted Julian’s
aggressive gesture, blocking his hand with effortless precision before
stepping into his personal space. The sheer physical dominance
radiating from him made Julian stagger back two steps, blood
seeping from the corner of his mouth where their hands had collided.
Before Julian could even regain his balance, John was towering over
him, his presence suffocatingly intense.

“You think she’s marrying up by joining my family?” John’s voice was
dangerously low.

Julian forced a bloody smirk.

Then John spoke again, his tone absolute. “You have it backward.
The Dupont family is the one marrying up by having her.”

Julian’s eyes widened slightly.

John stepped back, looking down at Julian with undisguised disdain.
“Do you honestly think her last name is just some common surname?”

“Let me make this perfectly clear. It’s Sterling as in the Stirlings of New York.”
