Some time later, Mrs. Carter came to see me at the Whitmore house.

I nodded hard. Then I turned and walked into the testing center.

I wasn’t afraid. Because I knew someone would be waiting for me when I came out.

When the results came out, I had earned a spot at Fairview Preparatory School.

Mrs. Whitmore cried.

Mr. Whitmore said we should celebrate it in a low-key way. Yet he quietly ordered a three-tiered

buttercream cake.

Every now and then, I’d still hear news about Seraphina.

She kept posting online about how she’d once turned down a wealthy family to live life on her own

terms.

No one in the comments was buying it.
