She’d clearly never expected Mrs. Whitmore to throw her own words back at her in front of

I looked her straight in the eye.

“I didn’t steal anything. I admitted what I wanted, and I went for it.”

“You wanted the same thing. You just couldn’t admit it.”

The fake pride she’d hidden behind finally shattered.

She was trembling from head to toe.

I turned to Mrs. Whitmore.

“Mom. Since Seraphina feels so strongly that family and money shouldn’t mix…”

“Then maybe any future support the Whitmore family gives to the group home shouldn’t include

her.”

“That would be the best way to respect her principles.”

Later, at Mrs. Carter’s insistence, Seraphina apologized to me.

as concern and spread rumors that I was being mistreated.
