Everyone thought I was just pretending to stay calm.

Only I knew I was becoming more certain with every passing day.

Seraphina, on the other hand, grew more anxious.

She started spending every day helping out in Mrs. Carter’s office.

Whenever someone praised her for staying humble even after joining the Whitmore family, she’d lower her head with a modest smile.

“Of course.”

“Ashford Estates isn’t that far away. Even after I leave, I’ll come back and visit everyone.”

She even pulled out her suitcase ahead of time, wiped it down, and packed all her clothes.

I had just come back from washing up when I saw her.

A soft laugh slipped out before I could stop it.

Her expression instantly cracked.

“Brynn, what are you laughing at? Do you honestly think filling out one stupid form means you have a shot?”

“You’re pathetic.”

“You want to know why the Whitmores will choose me?”

“Because I look like a daughter they could actually show off. And you?”

She looked me up and down.

“And you? You just look like a beggar clawing at a rich family’s door. You’d only embarrass them.”

Her words were cruel. But they didn’t upset me at all.

Because the comments were going wild right above her head.

[They’re coming to pick her up tomorrow! All that packing for nothing!]

I raised an eyebrow.

“Guess we’ll see soon enough.”

The next afternoon, the entire group home erupted.

“Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore are here!”

The moment the news spread, every child ran outside.

“They’re definitely here for Seraphina!”

“Seraphina, hurry and change!”

She kept saying she didn’t need to fuss, but her actions said otherwise.

She changed into a light pink dress, redid her hair, and even put on lip gloss.

Mrs. Carter personally rolled her suitcase over.

“You stubborn thing.”

“When you’re at the Whitmores’, be good and mind your manners. But don’t let them walk all over you either.”

Seraphina’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m going to miss all of you.”

The younger kids threw their arms around her, crying.

“Come back and visit us all the time, Seraphina!”

I stood at the top of the stairs like an outsider.

No one called my name. No one expected me to.

The Whitmores’ car stopped outside.

Mrs. Carter immediately guided Seraphina to the front.

“Mr. Whitmore, Mrs. Whitmore, Seraphina’s all packed.”

“She’s just too stubborn to say it, but she’s truly grateful to you both.”

Seraphina lowered her head, tears trembling on her lashes like she was being forced into a life of luxury against her will.

Mrs. Whitmore clearly looked confused.

She glanced at Seraphina, then at the suitcase.

After a brief pause, she gently shook her head.

“Mrs. Carter, I think there’s been a misunderstanding.”

“We’re not here for Seraphina.”

Everyone froze.

“Then… who are you here for?”
