My Bestie Called Money ‘Dirty’, Now She’s Watching Me Get Spoiled by Eight Men Chapter 03

Three days later, a Whitmore family assistant arrived at Silver Creek Group Home with a packet of paperwork.

The moment Mrs. Carter accepted it, she called for Seraphina.

Seraphina walked over wearing the same white dress, a reluctant smile resting on her face.

“Mrs. Carter, I already told you. I haven’t decided whether I’ll go.”

Mrs. Carter smiled helplessly.

“Oh, you stubborn girl. The Whitmores sent all this paperwork. Don’t keep brushing them off like that.”

“They’re being sincere. Don’t hurt their feelings.”

The younger kids immediately burst into cheers.

“Seraphina’s going to the Whitmores! She’s gonna be a rich heiress!”

“Don’t forget about us, okay?”

Seraphina lowered her head, twisting her fingers together, her cheeks flushing pink.

“Stop teasing me.”

“I just… didn’t want to disappoint Mrs. Whitmore. It’s not like I really wanted to join a wealthy family.”

Standing behind the crowd, I noticed the assistant frown slightly.

He flipped through the documents.

“Mrs. Carter, is Brynn here?”

Mrs. Carter blinked. “Brynn?”

“Yes. This supplemental form needs to be completed by Brynn herself.”

The room fell silent.

Seraphina’s shy smile froze on her face.

Mrs. Carter quickly laughed it off.

“There must be some mistake. Didn’t Mrs. Whitmore choose Seraphina that day?”

The assistant remained polite.

“There’s no mistake.”

“Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore would like to learn more about Brynn.”

“To be clear, this is only a request for additional information. It isn’t a final adoption decision.”

He chose his words carefully.

But for me, that was already enough.

I walked over, unable to hide the small spark of excitement in my chest, and accepted the form.

“Thank you.”

The looks around me changed instantly.

“It’s just paperwork. It’s not like they’ve picked her. What’s she so happy about?”

“They’re probably just making a comparison.”

“Right? Seraphina turned them down, so they needed a backup. That’s all.”

Seraphina smiled and stepped over to me.

“Brynn, don’t get your hopes up. It’ll only make the disappointment worse.”

“Families like the Whitmores are very careful. Looking at one more candidate doesn’t mean anything.”

I kept filling out the form without responding.

She continued anyway.

“Still, it’s a good opportunity for you, I suppose.”

“Even if you’re only being used as a comparison, it’s probably the closest you’ve ever been to people like them.”

The comments drifted across my vision.

[Comparison? The oldest Whitmore brother is already looking into transfer admissions at Fairview Prep.]

[The second brother’s already reading up on the legal side of adopting a minor.]

[The fifth brother secretly went and bought a mountain of gifts for his new little sister. All eight of them are absolutely losing it.]

I almost laughed.

When Seraphina saw that I stayed quiet, she seemed convinced she’d hit a nerve.

Her expression softened with even more pity.

“I’m not looking down on you.”

“I just don’t want you getting your hopes up. I’m only saying this for your own good.”

I looked up at her, slipped the form away, and met her eyes.

“I’m good.”

I turned and walked away.

Behind me, the mocking voices started up again.

“What’s with the attitude? Just wait until she gets rejected.”

“Yeah! Seraphina, once you’re a Whitmore, you have to put her in her place!”
