My Best Friend’s Secret Plan, My Dead Husband’s Watching Eyes Chapter 07

My Best Friend’s Secret Plan, My Dead Husband’s Watching Eyes Chapter 07

I knew he’d been beside me for three months, watching everything, and it had shattered him.

Trust, once broken, doesn’t come back easily.

But I had to roll the dice.

And this time, I won.

He sent his assistant to take me back to the house. Then he went to the bakery himself.

The bakery had cameras, and the footage could be pulled. I also told Graham I’d never even met Miles until

after his funeral, and asked him to look into Miles’s background.

Half an hour later, Vanessa burst into my room.

She had a suitcase. She shoved it at me.

“I’ve dismissed the house manager and the security guards. Maren, I know why you did what you did at the

wedding. You saw Graham alive and you panicked.”

“You’ve always loved Miles. There’s cash in here, and clothes. Take it and go. Now.”

I yanked my arm out of her grip.

“You want me to elope with Miles?”

“Are you stupid?”

Vanessa looked like she was about to lose it.

“Graham already tried to strangle you. What are you going to do, sit here and wait for him to finish the job?”

“You know how he is. He holds grudges. He’ll never forgive you for being with Miles. I’m trying to help you.”

I called her bluff. “Then come with us.”

Vanessa froze. “I can’t. I… my mom’s still here…”

“Just go! Graham’s not back yet. Go out the back door. Miles is waiting. I’ll keep the staff distracted.”

Vanessa didn’t wait for an answer. She turned and left.

I knew exactly where she was going: straight to Graham.

I followed her. She was talking, but not to anyone I could see.

hit record on my phone.

“System, once Maren and Miles run off, Graham’s going to be furious. That’s enough to get rid of her this

time, right?”

“I couldn’t have faked the pregnancy report or the photos and videos without those credits you gave me.”

“Tonight, when Graham drinks himself numb over this, I’ll slip him a little something extra. By morning, I’ll be

in his bed, and he won’t be able to deny me.”

She held up a small glass vial, a twisted smile on her face.

My stomach dropped.

I’d read enough books to know what a “system” was: some kind of cheat code, an advantage nobody else

could see. I just never thought one could actually exist.

That explained how Vanessa knew Graham would come back.

She wanted me to leave with Miles. Then Graham would dig into it and find photos and videos that looked

real.

Even if he found the bakery footage, he’d assume I ran because I had something to hide.

He’d hate me even more.

Before I could figure out my next move, Miles was behind me. His hand closed around mine.

“Don’t say a word. We’re going.”

A voice came from the dark, low and cold.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

Miles saw Graham and didn’t even flinch.

“I’m taking her out of here. She chose me. I’m the one she wants.”

Vanessa appeared out of nowhere, eyes wide, playing the horrified best friend to perfection.

“Maren, are you… are you going to elope with Miles?”

I ripped my hand free from Miles.

“Vanessa, you know exactly what’s happening here. Don’t you?”

“You’re framing me again… Maren, why…”

I was done talking. I hit play on my phone.

The color drained from their faces.

Vanessa’s voice went shrill.

You faked this. You faked it!”

“What systern? You used Al to fake my voice! This is a deepfake!”

Miles sighed. “Maren, I know you’re scared of what he’ll do to you. It’s okay. I’ll keep you safe. I…”

I cut him off. My eyes locked on Graham.

“You’ve seen the bakery footage by now. If this recording isn’t enough, search Vanessa. The drug is still on

her

The assistant didn’t wait. Security was on her in seconds. They found the vial.

Vanessa looked like she’d been gutted.

“Mr. Ashford, we found the vial. Just like she said.”

“If you still don’t believe me after all that, then there’s nothing left to say.”

I looked at Graham. My eyes were burning.

I couldn’t keep my voice steady.

1 don’t even care about the inheritance. I was faithful to you when you were alive, and I stayed faithful to you when you were dead. I never betrayed you. Not once. You don’t get to murder me for a lie.”
