My Best Friend’s Secret Plan, My Dead Husband’s Watching Eyes Chapter 06

“Shut up!”

My voice cracked with the scream.

Miles smiled wider. He wasn’t finished.

“Mr. Ashford, Maren and I haven’t been together nearly as long as you two were. I know I can can’t compete

with growing up side by side.”

“But if there’s anything I’m missing about keeping her happy, I’m sure you’ve got some tips.”

“Graham, I don’t know how this happened, but I swear I never…”

I stepped toward Graham.

He stepped back. One step. It cut deeper than anything Miles had said.

“That weekend I was out of the country, I called you six times. You didn’t pick up. You told me you were

sleeping.”

Miles let out a laugh.

“Oh, we heard it ringing. Neither of us felt like picking up.”

“What makes you think I’d ever choose you, Miles?”

“You’re not as good–looking as him. You’re not as rich as him. You bought a house you couldn’t afford and

tried to con me into covering the mortgage.”

“Why in the world would I leave Graham for a man who can’t even pay his own bills?”

The smile slipped right off Miles’s face.

“I don’t know how you faked that report. But you know. You know that baby isn’t yours.”

“Vanessa’s the one carrying your baby. Keep this up, and that kid’s going to end up calling someone else

Daddy.”

Miles’s eyes dropped to Vanessa’s stomach before he could stop himself.

Vanessa went very still.

She cut in fast. “Maren, just because you’re scared Mr. Ashford will find out you cheated doesn’t mean you

get to pin the baby on me.”

“We’re best friends. Miles is yours. Why would I ever do that to you?”

Miles was still staring at her stomach Vanessa forced a few perfect, theatrical tears.

“Miles, tell her. Please.”

“Don’t drag Vanessa into this!”

“Vanessa’s got nothing to do with this. I know you’re mad at me, but leave her out of it. You’re taking this too

far!”

“You accused Vanessa of being pregnant and the test proved you wrong. That’s not enough for you? You

really want me to take this further?”

Something in his voice made my skin crawl.

Miles pulled out his phone and angled the screen toward me.

The second I saw what was on it, my entire body went cold.

“I’ve got photos, Maren. Videos of us that day. You can clearly see the layout of the master bedroom. Care to

explain that?”

“You don’t want to admit it? Fine.”

He turned and showed them to Graham.

“Mr. Ashford, that’s your house. You’d recognize it anywhere.”

“And that mole on Maren’s waist? Not exactly public knowledge.”

I looked up at Vanessa through burning eyes.

She looked away. Not fast enough to hide the panic.

Only Graham and Vanessa knew about the mole on my waist.

“Photos and videos can be doctored. And if you know about a mole, you can fake that too.”

I closed my eyes. I was so tired.

“Graham, look into it. Please.”

Graham still didn’t speak.

His fist at his side was clenched so tight his knuckles cracked. He was running out of patience. I could feel

it.
Miles didn’t flinch. “Go ahead. Investigate all you want.”

I opened my eyes.

I didn’t understand it. The evidence was fabricated. I knew that. So why did they look like they had nothing to

hide?

Had they found a way to make the fakes airtight, the same way they’d faked the pregnancy?

Then it hit me. I grabbed Graham’s arm.

“That day, I did lie to you. I wasn’t asleep. But I was somewhere else, doing something else, and someone can

prove it.”

Graham’s birthday was the week after that Fourth of July weekend.

I’d spent the entire day at a bakery, trying to learn how to make him a birthday cake. I kept messing them up.

I was so frustrated I didn’t even hear the phone.

I didn’t want him to know I was failing so miserably, so I told him I’d been napping.

I didn’t say any of that out loud. I just looked at Graham.

“Just look into it. One last time.”

Something shifted on both Miles’s and Vanessa’s faces.

“Maren, we were together that day. It doesn’t matter who you dig up to back your story. The videos are real.

The photos are real.”

I ignored him.

I waited for Graham’s answer.
