I slept deeper than I ever had before.

When I woke, I was sprawled across an unfamiliar king-sized bed.

Panic hit for one sharp second..

Then I spotted Soren Shaw, asleep in the chair beside me, and the fear dissolved..

The moment I shifted, his eyes snapped open.

“You’re awake. Any discomfort?”

I shook my head.

I let him ease me up, propping me against the headboard.

“Last night…”

My voice came out wrecked.

He handed me a glass of water without a word.

The ice-cold liquid slid down my throat. Relief.

Then Soren spoke, his voice carefully neutral.

“Nothing happened between us. Don’t get the wrong idea.”

“The doctor already checked you out, but if anything feels off, I’m taking you to the hospital. Immediately.”

I froze.

My eyes found his.

Something about the worry in his gaze wrecked me. My throat tightened.

I threw myself into his arms, sobbing.

He went still for half a beat.

Then his arms locked around me, crushingly tight.

Like he was trying to pull me inside him.

“You’re safe. I’m right here.”

I cried for a long time.

Soaked his black dress shirt.

A complete mess.

When I finally surfaced, I sniffled hard.

Soren wiped my tears away with his knuckles, one by one.

“Don’t worry. I’ll get you justice.”

“Nobody touches you. Nobody.”

At the mention of Ryan, Soren’s face darkened.

Violence rolled off him in waves.

And God help me, I found it unbearably hot.

Heat bloomed in my chest. I kept stealing glances at him.

“What is it?”

He laughed softly.

Morning light carved his jawline clean and sharp.

My heart slammed.
