My Best Friend’s Brother is My Ex Chapter 05

I had no idea what Soren wanted to talk about. As far as he was concerned, the only link between us ought to be his sister.

His behavior had my anxiety spiking.By the time his assistant stepped in to refill his coffee for the third time, I was thoroughly wound tight.

The office door swung open soon after.

Soren walked in, his expression softening just slightly when he saw me sitting there. He headed straight over.“Mr. S—Mr. Shaw.”I stood up instinctively, awkward and stiff. For a fleeting, unaccountable moment, the light faded from his dark eyes.

Then, just as quickly, he was back to normal.“Sit down. You aren’t on my staff. Drop the formal title.”

His office was massive, being alone with him made the air feel thin.being alone with him made the air feel thin.

“So… why did you ask me to stay?”“Got your phone?”He countered, voice leaving zero room for argument.I blinked, then nodded.“Scan my contact. I’ll cover your taxi fare.”Wait—what?I almost thought I’d misheard him.Soren Shaw, running a tech conglomerate, handling reimbursement personally?“No, really, it’s fine. It’s just a few bucks.”I shook my head quickly.“Besides, I’m crashing at your place rent-free.”“That’s unrelated.”His gaze locked onto mine. After a pause, his thumb twitched slightly against his side.“I don’t like owing people.”I almost refused again.Until a sharp realization crashed over me.

Why was he pushing this? Did he suspect something? As Chloe’s classmate, he had no real reason to add me.Unless… he was already watching me.I forced down the panic rising in my throat. How on earth had he connected the dots with absolutely no proof?

I pulled up my QR code, watching him closely. His hand trembled—just barely.Like he was expecting something. Then his expression froze. He stared at the screen for a long time.Even scrolled through my feed, refusing to give up.Finally, he let out a breath—defeated.I lowered my eyes, relief flooding through me.Of course he found nothing. That old game account had lain dormant ever since SAT exams.

My current feed looked nothing like before.Still… seeing that matching profile picture from back then made my chest twist. He really hadn’t changed it?The silence stretched, heavy and suffocating.Soren looked up, voice rough.“You don’t have anything to tell me?”“Nope.”I forced a smile and stood.“It’s getting late. I should head back.”If I stayed any longer, I’d crack.“Wait.”His voice rooted me to the spot.

A cold shiver crawled down my spine.

Behind me, I heard him rub his temples, exhaustion thick in his tone.“I’ll send my driver to take you home.”
