The moment the director spotted me, his instinct kicked in, and he barked out orders. “Raina, you’re late. Half your pay’s getting docked today.”

Tessa’s face immediately darkened. Before she could speak, I put a hand up to stop her.

Looking around, I noticed my former coworkers staring at me with a mix of expressions.

Greta sat not far away, her face sour.

I offered a light smile. “I actually came to buy everyone coffee.”

“You?”

He let out a disdainful sneer.

“I’d be grateful if you didn’t mooch off the craft services table. And buy us coffee?”

“There are over three hundred people on this crew. How many days do you think you’d have to play a corpse to afford that?”

My parents were taken aback by the director’s attitude toward me. Anger flickered in their eyes.

But my smile didn’t fade. “Not just coffee. Lunch too.”

Without waiting for the director’s response, I turned to Tessa.

“Can you handle that?”

She didn’t say a word, simply pulling out her phone to make a call.

Before long, coffee and boxed lunches arrived.

The director and the cast were dumbfounded.

After all, just two days ago, I was face down in the dirt playing a corpse, the one everyone sneered at on that crew.

As Tessa’s assistant began handing out the food, I spoke up in a calm, steady voice. “Skip Greta’s portion.”

Greta’s eyes widened, and she snapped upright.

“Why?”

“Because that’s exactly what you did to me.”

The moment the words left my mouth, Greta’s face turned a brilliant shade of red.

Beside me, the true mastermind—Tessa—turned entirely pale.

“Raina…”

“Let’s go home,” I interrupted.

“Don’t bother apologizing anymore.”

“It’s meaningless.”

I went back to the estate.

Even after that small taste of revenge against Greta, I didn’t feel the rush of satisfaction I expected. Instead, a hollow emptiness washed over me.

It was as if I suddenly realized how pointless it all was; nothing could make up for the misery I had endured.

If anything, it only served as a harsh reminder of how utterly pathetic my life had been for the past five years.

I grew quiet, sinking into a silent, withdrawn state.

Sometimes I just stared out the window. Other times, I flipped through clips of the movies where I had played a corpse.

It really was a miserable sight.

There was one scene filmed during a severe hailstorm where I had to lie on the freezing ground wearing nothing but a thin dress.

Actors had stampeded right over me, stepping on my body. That pain felt even worse than the blood disease eating away at me now.

I still clearly remembered a sharp rock digging into my back during that shoot, but I hadn’t dared to utter a word.

If the director got annoyed, he wouldn’t just dock my pay; he would find endless ways to make my life a living hell on future sets.

I had long since learned to swallow my pride. After that specific shoot, I even had to flatter those same actors.

I had to smile and say things like, “Your performance was amazing.”

Tears silently spilled over my lashes. Tessa expertly held out a tissue, her voice trembling.

“Don’t watch it anymore, Raina. It’s over…”

“You’ll never have to live like that again. I’ll protect you.”
