I choked on the smoke. 

My hand pressed flat against his left chest. “Love me?” 

“That bullet six years ago must’ve hit your brain instead 

of your heart.” 

He rested his head against the column. Eyes half–lidded. 

Still smiling at me. 

“You little liar.” 

“I bet my life you wouldn’t pull the trigger. That’s why I let word reach your ear. My heart’s on the right side. You already knew that, didn’t you? If it weren’t for your shot, 

Cassano would’ve sent divers to fish my body out of the bay.” 

“I would’ve died in Italy.” 

His eyes started to close. 

I was about to say something when I caught the way his 

head tilted forward against the pillar. His lips had gone pale. 

In an instant, I knew. 

I didn’t ask. I grabbed his suit jacket and yanked it open. 

“Tina, isn’t this a little fast?” 

“I thought we’d at least wait for the wedding night to-” 

“Shut up, Matteo.” 

The bandages beneath his vest were soaked scarlet. 

“You’re insane. You have a death wish. I didn’t sign up to 

be a widow on day one.” 

I shouted toward the corridor. 

“Get a doctor to my residence. Knife wound.” 

Then I scooped him up into my arms. 

I’d never seen that expression on his face before. Almost 

bashful. 

“You–you can’t just carry me like this!” 

I rolled my eyes. My voice strained with the effort. 

“Don’t push me. My arms aren’t that strong. If I talk, I’ll drop you.” 

“If you drop me, I’m fish food in your pool.” 

He went quiet. 

He wrapped his arms around my neck and leaned into me 

without shame. 

In the hillside residence, Genevieve stood behind Dante. 

The ultrasound printout was crumpled in her grip. Her 

face twisted with indecision. 

Finally, she opened her mouth. 

“Dante.” 

He stood at the floor–to–ceiling windows. He didn’t turn. 

“Get some rest.” 

“I’m not upset about earlier. Maybe you just wanted a child that badly. Valentina won’t buy the pregnancy claim. 

Don’t bring it up around her again.” 

A pause. 

“I will marry you.” 

He said it once. Then again, like he was trying to convince himself. “I will marry you.” 

That was the push Genevieve needed. 

She thrust the ultrasound toward him. 

Her voice pitched with excitement and nerves. “I didn’t lie to Miss Luciano. I really am pregnant.” 

“Look. This is our baby.” 

Dante stared at the image. Flipped it over and back like he was searching for proof. 

“You’re really pregnant.” 

Genevieve’s heart jumped. She grabbed his hand and pressed it to her stomach. 

“Yes.” 

“Feel that? Eight more months and we’ll meet it.” 

Then she noticed. 

His fingers were trembling, not with excitement, but rage 

and suspicion. 

“I saw the doctor’s report from the Mediterranean. It was clear. Your uterus was removed. And now you’re telling me 

you’re pregnant.” 

“Genevieve, were you lying to me?”
