Mafia Princess Faked Amnesia, Learned the Truth, and Never Returned Chapter 01

After surviving an assassination attempt, I woke up faking amnesia to scare my fiancé, holding his hand and asking who he was.

Luca didn’t call a doctor right away. He didn’t rush to explain that he was my fiancé, either. Instead, he took a step back, like he was trying to keep his distance.

“I’m your best friend’s fiancé.”

“She can’t get away right now, so she asked me to keep an eye on you.”

I thought he was joking with me. I double-checked with my best friend, Isabella.

Without a second thought, she wrapped her arm around Luca’s. “Elena, you can’t have really forgotten, can you?”

“Luca and I are getting married in three days. You even promised to be my maid of honor.”

When my parents heard I’d lost my memory after the attack, they rushed over to the Bellini family hospital. I clung to my last shred of hope and asked, “Mom, Dad, is Luca really Isabella’s fiancé?”

My mom sighed. “Elena, Luca is about to get married.”

“Stop chasing after him. Otherwise, you and Bella won’t even be able to stay friends.”

My dad sounded relieved. “You’ve been throwing yourself at Luca all this time. You’ve already shamed your mother and me enough.”

I suddenly laughed. Good. I didn’t want to stay friends with Isabella, anyway.

As for my parents and my fiancé — they could all be wrapped up and handed to her as a package deal.

Isabella stepped in front of me, just like she used to. “Don’t blame Elena.”

“She didn’t really do anything wrong. She just likes Luca too much.”

Luca let out a sneer. He reached over and poked her on the forehead. “You never learn, do you?”

“She used to steal your stuff when you were kids.”

“Now she’s coming after your man, and you’re still defending her with every word.”

All I could feel was how absurd this was. She’d been left at our family estate for over a decade by her irresponsible parents.

She ate the same food and used the same things as me. And because her tongue was sweeter than mine, my parents even gave her extra rewards.

I used to complain to Luca that my parents seemed to favor an outsider more. Back then, he comforted me. “It doesn’t matter. I only love you.”

But now, he refused to acknowledge me and made me sound so despicable.

Isabella gave him a reproachful look. “Don’t talk nonsense. Elena will be upset if she hears that.”

“It’s the truth.” Luca began to count my “crimes.”

“Last month, on your birthday, I picked out a limited-edition Hermès for you, and she snatched it away anyway.”

I had, in fact, found a gift bag in the townhouse under my and Luca’s names. That day was our dating anniversary.

I instinctively assumed it was a surprise Luca had hidden away. But even when I was about to go to sleep that night, he hadn’t mentioned it.

I’d always been impatient. So I pulled the bag out myself. His smile at the time was strained.

It turned out the gift I’d taken was the birthday present he’d prepared for Isabella.

“When we go out to eat, she snatches the dishes you love and puts them in front of herself.” But the truth was, every single time, Isabella was the one who put the dishes I loved in front of me.

“Even the engagement ring I prepared for you, she had to take.” I looked down at the engagement ring on my left ring finger. When Luca gave it to me, it was a size too big.

He explained, “Leaving some room, so it’s easier to take off later.”

I didn’t suspect a thing. I even praised him for being thoughtful. So it turned out that, from the very beginning, this ring had never belonged to me.

When I snapped back to reality, I realized everyone’s eyes were fixed on my hand.

Luca lifted his gaze to me, his eyes full of impatience. “So—how much longer are you planning to keep what belongs to Bella?”

Isabella smiled and smoothed things over. “It’s fine. If Elena likes it, let her wear it.”

“Anyway, things can be taken away. But you’ll never be taken away from me.”

I stared blankly at the two of them flirting. I clenched my fist, the diamond digging painfully into my palm.

Once, when Luca was pursuing me, he’d said the same thing: I’m yours, and no one can ever take you away.

But now, Luca was coaxing my best friend in a soft voice. “Bella, the ring is yours. You don’t need to hand it out to Elena just because you feel sorry for her.”

My mom nodded along. “Luca’s right. Bella, you can’t keep spoiling her like this!”

“Don’t let her appetite grow, or she’ll fight you for everything from now on.”

Then she scolded me harshly. “How can you be so shameless?”

“That’s something Luca bought for Bella. Give it back!”

They were all delighted by my amnesia. They didn’t even seem worried about what would happen if I recovered my memory.

As if the gentleness my mom gave me, the shares my dad gave me, and Luca’s three years of courting were all a lie!
