Luna Returned for Vengeance Chapter 04

Luna Returned for Vengeance Chapter 04

Nora’s POV

I raced back to the old neighborhood like a madwoman. One thought ran through my head on a loop:

My grandmother had a bad heart. She couldn’t take this kind of shock.

But when I got upstairs, I saw red spray paint all over the walls.

Homewrecker.

Shameless.

Get out of New York.

Ugly funeral wreaths were propped against the door. Black condolence cards and hateful notes littered the floor. Neighbors stood in the hallway, whispering.

I pushed the door open and went inside.

The kitchen still smelled of my favorite seafood soup, simmering on the stove.

And my grandmother lay motionless on the floor.

“Grandma!”

I fell to my knees beside her, my hands shaking so badly I could barely hold her. Her face was ashen. She was unconscious.

The neighbors just stood there, staring. Pointing. No one came in to help.

My wolf let out a low, strangled growl deep in my chest. But I couldn’t waste time on them. I gritted my teeth, carried my unconscious grandmother on my back, and rushed downstairs to the Pack Hospital.

The lights outside the emergency room were blindingly bright. I stood there, bruised and battered—my face swollen, my arm blistered. I didn’t care.

A nurse hurried out, her expression grim.

“The elderly woman has suffered an acute heart attack. She needs surgery immediately.”

I grabbed onto her words like a lifeline.

“Then do it! Operate right now!”

But the nurse hesitated.

“The cardiac surgeon on duty is currently with a VIP patient.”

“According to Pack medical law,” I said, “emergency treatment takes precedence over all VIP privileges. Why are you making us wait?”

The nurse looked deeply apologetic.

“That patient holds a special status. We have no other choice.”

My mind went blank.

“She’s dying! And you’re telling me to wait?”

I didn’t wait for an answer. I turned and ran to the VIP consultation room. I threw the door open.

Sophie was sitting on the hospital bed.

She saw me, blinked in surprise—and then slowly smiled.

“Nora?”

I clenched my fists so hard my nails bit into my palms.

“Let the doctor go save my grandmother. She’s dying.”

Sophie blinked again, her voice soft and innocent.

“But my heart also hurts. My wolf was frightened by you yesterday and has been trembling ever since.”

I was about to break.

“Sophie! That’s a human life! Come after me if you want—but leave my grandmother out of this!”

My mother was dead. My father was dead. My grandmother was the only family I had left in the whole world.

Sophie looked at me and laughed softly.

“Fine. Get on your knees and beg me. Then I’ll let the doctor go.”

I hesitated for two seconds.

Then I dropped to my knees.

When I was driven out of New York years ago, I didn’t even dare contact my grandmother at first. I couldn’t bear to drag her into my nightmare. I never told her about any of it. All I ever wanted was for her to live a long, peaceful life.

I had already lost too much. I couldn’t lose her too.

“Please… let the doctor save my grandmother…”

When she saw me kneel, Sophie’s smile turned into a grin. She walked toward me slowly in her high heels, looking down at me like I was dirt.

“Look at you now, Nora. You’re no different from a stray rogue cast out of the Pack.”

She drove her heel down onto the back of my hand.

The pain was blinding. I let out a muffled cry. But she pressed harder, grinding her heel like she wanted to shatter my bones.

She leaned down, her lips close to my ear, and whispered each word slowly and clearly.

“Your grandmother. Your mother. Your father. They all deserved to die. How dare they give birth to a worthless little she-wolf like you.”

I lifted my head. My eyes were burning red.

And then, from the doorway, a deep voice spoke.

“Sophie.”

Sophie’s face changed instantly. Tears rolled down her cheeks. She threw herself into Ethan’s arms.

“Alpha… my heart hurts so much… And Nora won’t let the doctor see me! Does she want me dead? Is that it? So she can have you back?”

Ethan frowned at me, his eyes full of disappointment.

“Nora. You chose to end our relationship on your own years ago. Now you keep targeting my fiancée. What are you trying to achieve?”

I had no time for this. My grandmother was dying.

“Get out of my way.”

I should never have expected humanity from such cruel people. I turned to leave and find another hospital—

But I had only taken two steps when Ethan grabbed my wrist.

He stared at me, his voice low.

“You regret leaving me now? Is that why you keep showing up everywhere I go?”

I wrenched my arm away.

“Are you out of your mind?”

I ran back to the emergency room.

But the medical staff were already taking off their masks. They looked at me, their expressions complicated.

“We’re so sorry. We did everything we could.”

I stopped breathing.

The world went completely silent. Like someone had hit mute.

I slowly raised my head and looked at the hospital bed.

My grandmother lay there, still and quiet, a white sheet pulled up over her body.

In that moment, I understood. I had no immediate blood relatives left in this world at all

I was back on that terrible afternoon when I lost my mother. I was engulfed in utter despair, struggling even to breathe.
