Loved Me, Then Destroyed Me Chapter 05

The file slipped from Janice’s hand and hit the floor with a sharp snap.

She stared at the notification, reading it over and over in her mind.

“Samuel’s…dead?”

Her voice shook as she whispered it. She quickly contacted her mentor through an arcane channel.

The mentor was quiet for a moment, eyes fixed on the screen where my lifeless face stared back.

“Yes,” he said at last. “He’s gone.”

Janice’s eyes widened, panic breaking through. “He’s the main protagonist! He’s supposed to be

protected. How could he die?”

Her mentor let out a low breath.

“Janice, you let your feelings cloud your judgment. There’s only so much luck this world can give. You transferred most of Samuel’s luck to Tim. Once that happened, the thing keeping Samuel alive

disappeared.”

There was a pause. A flicker of something like pity crossed the mentor’s expression.

“Plus, you forced him through things he was never meant to endure. By the end, there was nothing left. Everything that should’ve sustained him had already been stripped away.”

Janice pressed a hand to her chest. The pain there tightened until it was hard to breathe. She couldn’t accept that she had caused my death with her own hands.

She shook her head, frantic. “That’s not possible! Samuel’s my husband. He’s the one I love. How could I

ever hurt him?”

“Janice,” the mentor said, voice steady and cold, “that’s exactly what you did. You chose Tim, again and

again. Every time, Samuel paid for it. In the end, it cost him everything. Including his life.”

Beside her, Tim noticed something was wrong. He reached out and tugged at her sleeve.

“Janice? What’s going on? You were saying something…”

Janice jerked his arm away.

Her thoughts churned, crashing into each other. She couldn’t hold them still. She didn’t care that she was in the middle of a meeting, or the stunned look on Tim’s face.

She turned and ran out.

Tim stood there for a second, caught off guard. It was the first time she had ever treated him with such coldness.

He bit his lip, a flash of embarrassment and hurt crossing his face, then hurried after her.

Janice rushed onto the tarmac, heading straight for the helicopter. Her hands shook as she reached for

the controls.

She was going to find me. She refused to believe I was really dead.

Just as she was about to climb in, she saw Katie returning with the rest of the team. Their faces were tight with grief and anger. Every pair of eyes landed on her like a blade.

Janice’s heart dropped. She stumbled forward, her voice unsteady.

“Where’s Samuel? How is he?”

Katie let out a cold laugh, her gaze full of contempt. “You really have the nerve to ask that? He’s dead. He

died the moment you flew off.”

“That’s not possible!” Janice shook her head. “He already had surgery. He just needed time to recover. You’re lying! What is this? Some kind of trick?”

Her words tumbled over each other, desperate and sharp.

Katie looked at her in disgust.

“You really don’t know what you’ve done? Why wouldn’t he die? Everything that happened to him started with you! You worked with the resistance group and had him taken and tortured. Even at the end, you

still didn’t let him go.”

Janice shook her head, panic rising. “How do you know that? Who told you?”

Katie’s voice rose, anger breaking through.

“Not just me. All of us know! And soon, so will headquarters. Samuel loved you more than anything. And what did you do? You sent him straight into hell and made sure they broke him, exactly the way you wanted! And after he was finally rescued, you still had Tim finish the job, just so he could take the credit.”

Janice’s mind buzzed, the words refusing to settle. “That’s not true! I never told Tim to kill him!”

Katie gave a sharp, humorless laugh. She pulled out her phone and brought up the recording.

The conversation between Tim and me played out in front of her.

Only then did Janice realize that it was Tim who injected me with the septic agent.
