The day after Benjamin’s company went public and that scandal exploded, the stock price tanked. It crashed right through the offering price. 

Benjamin panicked, running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Meanwhile, my sister was still confronting him about the affair. In the heat of the moment, he demanded a divorce. 

At first, she refused. Then she watched the stock price plummet. 

She’d seen this before. She was terrified of drowning in debt again. 

After a few days of nonstop losses, fear and survival instinct kicked in. She signed the papers. 

Soon after, Benjamin’s company was acquired. 

Gone, as if it had been a dream. 

Years later, my sister and I finally sat down together. 

“I lost again,” she admitted. “But you didn’t win either.” 

“How do you figure?” 

“Charles went bankrupt. You’re as broke as I am now. Right?” 

I raised one finger and shook it solemnly. “No, no, no. Him going bankrupt doesn’t mean I have nothing.” 

I slid a business card across the table. “I work here now. You 

saw it last time.” 

Her eyes went wide. She dropped her fork. She picked up a new one but just held it, not eating. “That’s… Raylight Holdings? The company that bought us out?” 

I took a sip of wine and dabbed my mouth. “Yep. And funny enough, I’m the CEO.” 

Her fork clattered onto the table again. “No. That’s impossible. How can that be? You’re a woman.” 

“Why is that impossible?” My face hardened. “Do you want to know why you failed in both lives?” 

“Because you always put your hope in other people. When you had money, you leaned on a man. When you had no money, 

you leaned on a man. You never once tried to stand on your 

own.” 

“But in the last life, you-” 

She looked lost. She didn’t understand. 

“You think I relied on Benjamin? That’s just your assumption. Because you can’t do anything yourself, you assume other 

women can’t either.” 

“All you saw was that he was good to me. If you’d paid any attention at all, you would have seen my rough hands and my 

wrinkles. Those were the marks of us fighting side by side.” 

“I was lovesick once. I fell for pretty words. But after I woke up, I realized that relying on yourself is the only way.” 

“No matter your situation, no matter the obstacles, when you 

have strength in your own two hands, you can move mountains and overcome anything. But you never understood 

that, Olivia.” 

I called for the check. 

My sister shot up from her seat. “One more time. Give me one 

more chance. I’ll beat you this time.” 

I put my hand on the door and looked back with a sigh. “You still don’t get it. Do the math. You’re only thirty–six.”
