Nina got her acceptance letter from a mediocre state school.

To make up for the “injustice” my family had caused, and to prove how generous we were, my parents decided to throw her a huge graduation party.

Right on our front lawn.

On the day of the party, my mom dragged me out of my room.

She put me in a new white dress.

“Guests are coming today. Don’t you dare make a scene. Got it?”

I looked at my expressionless reflection and nodded.

Of course not.

The show was just starting.

The lawn was packed. Every relative and family friend was there.

They all surrounded Nina.

She was wearing the designer gown my mom had bought for her—the one I’d wanted for my birthday last year.

Her makeup was perfect. She moved through the crowd like a queen, soaking up praise.

“That servant’s daughter has more sense than Elena.”

“Right. I heard Elena’s still sick, thinks everyone’s out to get her.”

“Keep your voice down. Her parents are right there.”

“So what? They probably love this girl more than their own daughter now.”

The whispers buzzed around me.

My parents’ faces went pale and red, but they just smiled and made excuses.

I was just tired, they said.

I found a corner and watched.

Soon, Nina glided over with two glasses of red wine.

“Elena,” she said, smiling like she’d already won.

“Thanks for coming to my party. I know you’re upset, but we all have to move on, don’t we?”

She handed me a glass, regal as a queen.

“Let’s drink to it. A toast. My apology. Let’s be sisters again.”

I didn’t take it.

Her smile froze.

Everyone turned to stare.

“Not going to take it?” She added a little hurt to her voice.
