I’ve Been Suspicious Since The Day I Was Born Chapter 05

My parents meant what they said. No contact with the outside world.

Every mealtime, my mom brought food herself and watched me eat.

She probably thought I’d starve myself in protest.

I played along perfectly.

As long as she opened the packaging or served it from the pot in front of me, I ate every bite.

But one time, Mrs. Shaw showed up with a bowl of her homemade soup.

She smiled sweetly.

“Elena, don’t be mad at your parents. I made your favorite. Have some, okay?”

Her voice was syrup, her eyes full of kindness.

I looked at that bowl and my stomach turned.

“Take it away,” I said coldly.

Her smile flickered.

“Elena, what’s this? Still angry at me?”

“I said take it away. I’m afraid there’s something in it.”

Her face went crimson. Her hands shook.

My mom walked in and saw it. Her lips trembled with fury.

“Elena! You’re impossible!”

She snatched the bowl and slammed it on the floor in front of me.

“We all want to hurt you! There. Happy?”

She dragged Mrs. Shaw away.

I looked at the mess on the floor and felt nothing.

In my world, there’s no such thing as overreacting. Only being sure.

To them, this was proof I was getting worse.

The more disappointed they were in me, the guiltier they felt toward Mrs. Shaw and Nina.

And that guilt needed an outlet.
