Chapter 7 My Own Happiness

“Hey guys, what… what do you want from me?” Maxwell’s hands were tied, and his voice shook with fear.

“Ahhh!”

One of the men, clearly the leader, walked up and sliced off one of Maxwell’s fingers without saying a word. Maxwell let out a bloodcurdling scream.

“You owe money and won’t pay up, so I had to come get you myself.” The man smiled as he spoke.

Maxwell was so terrified he pissed himself right there. He’d been hiding all over the place for days trying to avoid the debt collectors, but they’d found him anyway.

The warehouse filled with the stench of urine, and the man covered his nose and stepped back in disgust. “If you don’t pay what you owe today, I can’t promise you’ll walk out of here in one piece.”

He raised the knife again and moved closer to Maxwell.

“Please, man, just… just give me a little more time! I swear I’ll pay you back!” Maxwell sobbed as the blade pressed against his crotch.

“Why the hell should I trust you? What if you run again?”

“I won’t run, I promise! You guys must be tired, right? If you don’t believe me, I… I can get you a woman to have some fun with!” Seeing the man hesitate, Maxwell quickly added more.

The leader thought it over for a moment and decided it was a decent trade. He sent his guys to grab Tiffany. When they dragged her in, she’d been in bed with another man, and the marks on her body were still visible.

Maxwell spotted white liquid on Tiffany’s body and flew into a rage. “You shameless bitch! You’re pregnant with my kid and you’re already crawling into bed with other men?”

Tiffany saw how pathetic Maxwell looked now and dropped the act completely. “Hah! Your kid? You idiot, I was never pregnant! You’re sterile and you thought you could have children? What a joke!”

Maxwell stared at her in disbelief, his voice shaking with fury. “You whore! I treated you so well, and the second things go bad, you bail on me? I’ll haunt you even after I’m dead!”

That only made Tiffany laugh harder. “You want to know something? I knew that USB drive had the backup files the whole time. I’m the one who leaked the proposal in the first place!

“I kept it from Natalie on purpose because I wanted to get rid of her and take her place as Mrs. Sullivan. But turns out you’re completely useless. Without Natalie, you can’t even keep your own company afloat! Now you’ve dragged me down with you!”

The truth hit Maxwell like a lightning bolt. He thought about everything he’d done and how badly he’d hurt the only woman who’d ever truly cared about him. The regret crushed him.

A few seconds later, Maxwell lifted his head with bloodshot eyes and looked at the group of men. “She’s my woman. I’m giving her to you. Do whatever you want with her.”

Tiffany saw the men slowly approaching her and started screaming. “Maxwell, what are you doing? Get away from me! Let me go!”

One of the men got annoyed with her shrieking and slapped her hard across the face, then stuffed a rag in her mouth to shut her up.

Throughout the entire night, different men took turns anymore.

After they finished, one of the men walked over to Maxwell and untied him.

“I’ll let you off today, but if you don’t pay up next time, I’ll chop off your hands and feet!”

Maxwell looked like a walking corpse. He nodded stiffly and shuffled toward the door.

Tiffany had been thrown to the ground, and her eyes burned with hatred. “Go to hell!” She struggled to her feet, grabbed a knife from the floor, and rushed at Maxwell, plunging it deep into his chest.

The man saw that Tiffany had completely lost it and immediately called the police.

The police arrested Tiffany for murder. The evidence was solid, so she was sentenced to death right away. After they took Tiffany away, the man pulled out his phone and called me. Ms. Brooks, everything’s been taken care of.”

When I got that call, I was already enrolled in a school abroad.

Over the next few years, I left those painful memories behind and started fresh. After I finished my degree, I went home and took over the company. I expanded into international markets and turned the company into the industry leader.

Once my career was stable, Dad kept pushing me to think about settling down and getting married.

Julian had been chasing after me all those years. Even though I never gave him an answer, he quietly stayed by my side.

I finally asked him why, and he smiled. “Back in kindergarten, I was this scrawny little kid who always got picked on. You were the one who protected me. I decided right then that when I grew up, I’d be the one protecting you instead. I just want to be with you, even if you end up marrying someone else.”

At that moment, I suddenly understood how amazing it felt to be truly loved by someone.

So we got married abroad, and I finally found my own happiness.
