IPO Eve: His Workaholic Wife Quits Chapter 03

Chapter 3 The Mole

I didn’t want to argue with them anymore. I pulled out the divorce papers I’d already prepared. “Maxwell, I’m not threatening you. The divorce won’t affect my dad’s partnership with your company. Just sign it and we can both move on.”

Maxwell seemed genuinely shocked that I actually wanted a divorce. He looked dazed for a moment, then his voice rose to a furious shout. “Natalie, you’re being completely unreasonable! You think my company can’t survive without your dad’s help? Fine!”

He grabbed the divorce papers and scrawled his signature across them. “You’re the one who wanted this divorce, Natalie. Even if you get on your knees and beg me later, I’ll never forgive you! Now get out!”

I looked at the signed papers and felt something ease in my chest. I actually smiled. “Maxwell, I hope you two have a wonderful life together.”

I turned to leave, but then another message came through from my contact. “Ms. Brooks, did you get the backup drive? We’re running out of time!”

I thought about all the people at the company who’d poured their hearts into this project and were still working overtime right now. I had to stop and pull up the chat history on my phone.

“Look for yourself. This is from your informant. If you don’t believe me, at least believe your own people, right?”

Maxwell didn’t even glance at it. He snatched my phone and crushed it under his foot.

“Natalie, you’re still trying to lie to me? I won’t believe another word you say!”

Tiffany piled on. “Natalie, you really went all out trying to trick Maxwell. You even got the informant to play along with your little act.”

Watching them tag-team me, I was so furious I almost laughed. “Maxwell, are you out of your mind? You planted that informant yourself. Did you forget?

“You destroyed the USB drive with your own hands. If you actually care about the company, you better come up with a new proposal fast!”

Maybe my anger startled him, because doubt flickered across Maxwell’s face for a second.

Then, Tiffany walked into the bedroom and came back with a document. “Natalie, you’re such a good actress. You almost had me convinced. Maxwell gave me the proposal a few days ago. It’s right here. How could it possibly have been leaked?”

Her words jogged my memory. The informant had told me he saw a familiar woman at the office.

“You’re the one who leaked it, aren’t you?” I narrowed my eyes.

Tiffany’s face turned bright red, and she pointed at me furiously. “You’re talking nonsense! You screwed up at work, and now you’re trying to frame me for it.”

Then she threw herself at Maxwell in tears. “Maxwell, you have to stand up for me!”

Maxwell couldn’t stand seeing Tiffany cry. The next second, he grabbed me and kicked my knee hard, forcing me down in front of her. “Natalie, how can you be so shameless? You need to kneel and apologize to Tiffany!”

Pain shot through my knee but I forced myself to shout. “Maxwell, if you don’t believe me, just call your informant! We can confront each other right here!”

At that, Maxwell slapped me even harder. “You really won’t give up until you hit rock bottom, will you? Fine. I’ll do you a favor. Let’s see how long you keep up this act!”

Then he let go of me and pulled out his phone to make the call.

The phone rang for a few seconds before someone answered.

“Ah!”

Maxwell was about to speak when Tiffany suddenly let out a scream. He immediately dropped his phone and rushed over to steady her.

“Tiffany, what’s wrong?”

Tiffany leaned weakly against him and gently touched her stomach. “Maxwell, I never told you this, but I’m pregnant.”

Maxwell froze, then his face lit up with joy. “Tiffany, is it really true? I’m so happy!”

He pulled Tiffany into a tight embrace and lowered his head to press his ear against her stomach.

Watching them act so intimate made my emotions churn.

Maxwell and I had been married for five years without getting pregnant, so our parents pushed us to get medical checkups.

The results showed Maxwell had a low sperm count. To protect his pride, I kept it secret from everyone and lied that I had health issues instead. Gradually, he stopped touching me altogether.

Thinking about all this, I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly. “Maxwell, you should get a paternity test. That baby might not even be yours.”

Tiffany immediately started crying. “Natalie, what are you trying to say? Are you calling this baby a bastard?”
