In the Frigid Apocalypse My Husband Lost His Wife With His Own Hands Chapter 09

I did not look back.

The collar suddenly cinched tight around my neck.

Sophie stood at the other end of the corridor with the remote in her hand.

My wedding ring hung at her throat.

“Don’t run.”

“Ethan won’t let you die. As long as you save me, he really will take you home.”

I stared at the ring.

Sophie instinctively covered it with her hand.

“He gave it to me for safekeeping.”

“He doesn’t love me. He just owes me his life.”

“But Nora, you’ve already died once.”

“What difference does it make if you sacrifice yourself one more time for someone who’s still alive?”

I lunged at her.

Sophie immediately pressed the button.

Electricity tore through my spine.

I slammed to the floor as fractures spread through my body.

Ethan rushed over and immediately snatched the remote from her.

“Who told you to use the highest setting?”

Sophie threw her arms around him, sobbing.

“She tried to kill me!”

“I was terrified.”

Ethan handed her off to the medical staff, then lifted me into his arms.

“Stop the procedure.”

“Repair her body first.”

I thought he was finally going to let me go.

Then he lowered me back into the containment pod, and the locks snapped shut.

I grabbed his wrist.

Ethan tried to soothe me in a low voice.

“That’s enough.”

“Sophie has only two hours left.”

“Once she’s stable, I’ll come back for you myself.”

Again, he wanted me to wait.

When we were young, he had asked me to wait until he saved enough for tuition.

After we married, he had asked me to wait until his career was stable.

After the world froze, he had asked me to wait for him to come back.

Now he wanted me to wait for another woman to survive.

He always assumed I would wait because, no matter how long he stayed away, I had always remained

exactly where he left me.

I slowly released him and stopped struggling.

Ethan visibly relaxed.

He patted my head.

“That’s better.”

He thought I had finally come around.

In truth, I was done explaining.

After the researchers left, I worked a small ice shard out of my throat.

It was the lock-release chip Maisie had secretly given me.

The containment pod opened again.

This time, I did not head for the exit.
