In the Frigid Apocalypse My Husband Lost His Wife With His Own Hands Chapter 01

The night the Deep Freeze hit, I was trapped in an underground parking garage and froze to death.

Seven days later, I clawed my way out of the ice. My body held no warmth, but I still remembered my husband, Ethan Mercer.

When his convoy passed, I dragged my frost-cracked legs after it for three blocks.

Ethan finally stopped. But he had a young woman burning with fever in his arms, and he never even looked at me before ordering his team, “Clear out the frost-dead behind us.”

I opened my mouth, but all that came out was a harsh rasp like ice grinding against ice.

A string of icy blue commands suddenly flashed across my vision.

[Subject 001: emotional response reactivated.]

[Homing target locked: Ethan Mercer.]

[Replacement dependent detected: Sophie Reed. Jealousy-induction protocol activated.]

[Predetermined termination method: detonation by homing target.]

Sophie lifted her head from Ethan’s arms.

“Ethan, has she been following us this whole time?”

Ethan turned. His gaze passed over the mass of frost-dead and settled on my face.

He pulled out a remote and pressed the red button with his thumb.

An entire crate of explosives was buried beneath my feet.

The blast ripped through the whole street. My right leg snapped off at the knee, and my frozen body slammed into a snowdrift.

The frost-dead behind me shattered into chunks of ice.

I felt no pain. I only stared blankly at the lower half of my leg lying off in the distance.

Ethan had really blown me up.

“Ethan, it’s still moving!”

Sophie shrank against his chest, breathing hard.

Ethan handed her off to one of his teammates and walked toward me with his rifle in hand.

I braced myself on both hands and dragged my ruined body toward him.

“Hh…”

“Hh… hh…”

It’s me.

His combat boots stopped in front of me.

I turned my wrist over and showed him the wedding band on my ring finger. It was the plain band we had bought when we got married.

Ethan had said we could replace it once we had money. I had never been able to part with it.

A tiny inscription inside the band read:

[E & N — Always find your way home.]

Something flickered in his eyes.

I thought he had recognized me and quickly grabbed his hand.

Instead, Ethan seized my wrist.

“Where did you get that ring?”

I forced my mouth open.

“No… ra…”

My ruined throat could produce only a faint, garbled rasp.

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Did you eat her?”
