“She stole them and then framed her own sister?”

“That’s terrifying.”

Chloe kept shaking her head.

“It wasn’t me. It wasn’t me.”

“It was Tessa. She did all of this. She framed me!”

She turned and tried to run, but an officer blocked her path.

“Chloe DeLuca, you’ll need to come with us to cooperate with the investigation, in the presence of your legal guardians.”

“No, I’m not going!”

She grabbed Mom’s arm, sobbing.

“Mom, save me! It really wasn’t me! You have to believe me!”

Mom stood frozen.

Dad’s face was ashen.

Nico suddenly turned to me, his eyes wide with shock.

I no longer cared what anyone around me was saying.

The outcome was decided.

Chloe was escorted out of the auditorium by the officers.

She screamed the entire way, crying that I had set her up.

But this time, no one believed her.

I turned and walked out.

“Tessa.”

Mom finally ran after me.

There was panic in her voice.

“Wait, Tessa.”

I stopped but didn’t turn around.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I was wrong. I shouldn’t have doubted you.”

Dad walked over, his steps heavy.

“Tessa, I was wrong, too,” he said. “I shouldn’t have taken someone else’s side without even asking you what happened.”

Nico stood beside them, his voice low.

“I’m sorry.”

I listened to their apologies.

Then I said, “Okay. I heard you.”

And I kept walking.

They stood there and didn’t follow me again.
