The office fell silent.

Dad opened his mouth, but the words died on his lips.

Mom just stared at me, as if she couldn’t process what I’d just done.

Chloe stood frozen, her expression shifting rapidly.

This wasn’t what she wanted.

She wanted me to argue with our parents.

She wanted to hear Dad say the words “change classes” out loud.

That way, she could continue playing the part of the poor, targeted younger sister.

But I hadn’t given her the chance.

I stood there, perfectly still.

Chloe was the first one to break.

“You… you don’t have to do that.”

Mom finally recovered, her tone softening considerably.

“Chloe, see? Tessa has already apologized.”

“From now on, if anything happens at school, you go straight to your sister.”

I looked at Dad.

“What were you about to say?”

Dad hesitated.

Now that I had apologized in front of everyone, bringing up the class change would seem pointedly cruel.

“Nothing,” he said. “Just remember what you said today. Chloe is your sister. You need to look after her.”

“Okay,” I said.

From the corner of my eye, I saw Chloe bite down hard on her lip.
