I Was Working Late, He Was Eating My Food and Falling for My Best Friend Chapter 06

I rushed to the doctor.

“How is my father?”

He removed his mask. His expression was calm.

“We were able to stabilize him. He’s been moved to a standard hospital room. Once he wakes up,

we’ll keep him for observation for a few days.”

The relief hit so hard that my knees buckled.

“Careful, Annie.”

Ethan caught my arm. I pulled away and followed Mom into Dad’s room.

After they were settled, I returned to the apartment and began packing.

Lily ran out of the bedroom when she heard me.

“Annie, what’s going on? Why are you moving out?”

She sounded appropriately concerned. Looking at her, I suddenly needed to ask one question.

“Lily, how long have we known each other?”

She blinked.

“Why are you asking? A long time.”

“Ten years. We met in middle school, went to the same high school and college, and even became roommates. I thought you were the best friend I could ever ask for.”

She looked away from my steady gaze.

“Why bring this up now?”

“Because you could have told me you loved Ethan. You didn’t have to go behind my back.”

The room went silent.

Lily gave an awkward laugh.

“Annie, what are you talking about?”

“I found your secret account.”

The color drained from her face. After a long silence, she stopped pretending.

“Fine. I love him. I love Ethan because no one has ever treated me as well as he does.”

Her voice rose as tears filled her eyes.

“I didn’t get lucky like you. My family has no money, and my younger siblings depend on every

dollar I make. Is it so wrong to want someone to love me?”

“Why did you get everything, Anna? You earn more than I do. Your parents adore you. You have

never failed at anything. I have nothing. I only wanted Ethan to spend a little time with me.”

She lifted her chin to keep her tears from falling.

“I know you’re laughing at me inside. I don’t care. Loving him is not wrong.”

I let go of everything I had planned to say.

“Lily, I did not cause your suffering.”

A noise came from the doorway. Ethan stood there rigid. I did not know how long he had been

listening.

I finished packing and rolled my suitcase toward the door without looking at him.

Ethan started after me.

“Ethan,” Lily said, her voice trembling. “I need to talk to you.”

He stopped.

“Just this once. Please.”

Disgusted by both of them, I brushed past Ethan and left.

It was hard to get a ride from our building. I had been waiting for several minutes when Ethan

shouted behind me.

“Annie, wait!”

He ran toward me, out of breath.

“Are you going back to the hospital? I’ll drive you.”

“No. Lily wanted to talk to you.”

He took my suitcase and put it in his car before I could object.

“We already talked. I made it clear that I will never be with her. I only helped her because she was

your friend.”

He opened the passenger door.

“When your dad is better, let’s get married. We’ll move somewhere that belongs only to us. Please,

Annie.”

I looked at him for a long time. I neither agreed nor argued. I did not have the energy to think about

US.
The sticker Lily had jokingly placed on the passenger seat to claim it as hers was gone.

Ethan noticed me looking and straightened.

“I know what I want now. You’re the only woman I love.”

I leaned back and watched the city slide past the window. It was time to stop putting everyone

else first.

As soon as we reached the hospital, Ethan’s phone rang.

The contact name was Lily, followed by two heart emojis.
