I Was Working Late, He Was Eating My Food and Falling for My Best Friend Chapter 05

“How could this happen?”

Ethan stood frozen before the television, staring at the image of Annie’s father lying in a pool of

blood.

He remembered the promise he had forgotten.

He had gotten up early and had been ready to leave when Lily complained of cramps. Her periods

were irregular, and the pain often drained all the color from her face. He could not bear to see her

suffer.

So he went back inside, made her hot tea, and found her heating pad. By the time he finished

taking care of her, it was late.

He had told himself a short delay would not matter

He snatched up his keys and ran for the door.

“Ethan, what’s wrong?” Lily called after him.

He did not stop to explain.

The hospital was crowded. It took him several minutes to find me.

“Annie, I’m sorry. I…”

I slapped him as hard as I could.

“If you had kept your promise, my father would never have been out there alone. If he dies, I will

never forgive you.”

Ethan held his cheek and stared at me.

“Annie…”

Mom quickly stepped between us.

“Enough. The only thing that matters right now is that your father survives.”

The surgery had already lasted five hours. Nurses came and went with grave expressions. I had

bitten my lip until I tasted blood.

Ethan stood rigidly beside us, still trying to defend himself.

“I know I was late, but it was because Lily…”

“I don’t want to hear it.”

I cut him off, my jaw aching from how tightly I held t.

“I don’t want to hear another excuse about Lily. I only want my father to live.”

“And we’re already over. I’m moving out today. You and Lily can finally stop hiding and be together.”

His head snapped up.

“What are you talking about? Hiding what? There is nothing between us.”

“You’re still pretending?”

I fought to control myself in front of Mom and thrust my phone at him.

“Read it yourself.”

Ethan’s face changed as he read Lily’s posts.

“No, Annie. This isn’t what you think. I don’t have feelings for her. You told me she was your best

friend. You asked me to be nice to her.”

He grew more frantic.

“Maybe I crossed some boundaries, but I did it for you. I paid her rent because she said she couldn’t afford it. I only wanted to make sure you two could keep living together. I took her to the amusement park because she said she had never been to one. I felt sorry for her.”

For a moment, I could only stare at him.

“You don’t love her? Then why did you choose an apartment near both your offices? Why did you leave me stranded after work? Why have you chosen her every single time?”

He looked wounded.

“I already explained the apartment. I had no idea you saw things this way.”

He spread his hands desperately.

“Everything I did for Lily was because she was your friend. I’m sorry about your father, but…”

I was suddenly too tired to keep fighting.

I turned away.

“It doesn’t matter anymore, Ethan. You say you looked after her because she was my friend, but you showed her more consideration than you ever showed me. And I’m the one who got hurt.”

“You can treat her however you want. From now on it has nothing to do with me.”

He opened his mouth, but the operating room light went dark.
