I Was Single Until A Restaurant Handed Me My Mother In Law’s Debt Chapter 08

Zoey’s face was pale, and she did not dare say a word. I also picked up on something odd.

Nathan told us he owned three locations.

Because of that, his computer had access to the security feeds from all three locations.

He had set it up that way in case something happened without his knowledge.

When he received the call, Nathan had been checking the surveillance footage.

As Zoey listened to him, her face went white, and she sank to the floor.

In the end, all of us were taken to the police station.

I knew that with the surveillance footage and the video I had recorded inside the private dining

room, the truth would surface soon.

Sure enough, it did not take long after Zoey was taken in before she confessed to everything.

That so-called mother-in-law was not my mother-in-law at all. She was Zoey’s mother-in-law.

Even the supposed $15,000 charge was fake. Zoey’s mother-in-law could not possibly have spent

that much.

Zoey had pocketed the money.

She had already planned to quit her job, so she had wanted to make one last score before leaving.

As long as I paid, Zoey would leave the next day. By then, even if I came back to complain, nothing

would come of it.

She had chosen me because I had brought clients with me. In Zoey’s eyes, I would be too

embarrassed to make a scene in front of them.

But she had not expected me to ignore her completely.

She also had not expected me to call the police.

After Zoey confessed to everything, several officers left and soon brought Zoey’s mother-in-law

back as well.

Once the older woman was frightened by the officers, she confessed to everything too.

Because Zoey had gotten familiar with the restaurant’s regular customers, she had already asked around about some of them and learned quite a bit of their personal information.

From what the older woman said, this was already the third time in three days.

The first two times, Zoey had waited until the customers were drunk and then slipped the extra bill

in front of them. A few of them had not paid attention and had simply paid it.

I was the only one who refused because I had not been drinking, and the bill did not match what we

had ordered.

Nathan was livid.

He had never expected something like this to happen in his own restaurant.

“Ms. Carter, I’m sorry. What happened today was due to my poor management,” Nathan said as he looked at me. “Please rest assured. From now on, whenever you dine at The Harborview, you’ll

receive thirty percent off.”

“Also, today’s dinner was our mistake. It’s on me.”

After saying that, Nathan hurried back. I knew he was going back to audit the accounts and find out exactly how much Zoey had stolen while he was not paying attention.

I looked at Nathan’s retreating figure and shook my head.

If Zoey dared to be this blatant, it proved one thing. This business would not last much longer.

The incident at The Harborview was only a brief interruption in my life.

After I got home, I sent my clients a message and explained everything clearly.

They all said they understood.

They even comforted me and said none of it was my fault.

The next day, I still hosted clients at my company and signed contracts with several of them.

We were not affected by what had happened the day before at all.

However, when I made the dinner reservation, I did not choose The Harborview again. Instead, I picked another restaurant that was even more upscale.

I brought the clients to the new restaurant, and by unspoken agreement, no one mentioned what

had happened the day before.

The dinner went very smoothly. We ordered dishes similar to the ones from the previous night, and

when the check came, it was only $2,250.

That was $750 cheaper than The Harborview.

Looking at the check in my hand, I could not help laughing.

I knew Nathan’s restaurant was definitely going to run into trouble.

For some time after that, I avoided The Harborview almost entirely whenever I ate out.

I heard that after what happened to me got out, even though Nathan tried to suppress the news,

could no longer keep it quiet.

The Harborview was still badly affected by the scandal.

The customers Zoey had scammed also went back to The Harborview to demand refunds.

Business at The Harborview plummeted even further.

Nathan was furious and sued Zoey and her family.

I heard that Zoey was ultimately sentenced to ten years.

A few months later, I went to a coffee shop and unexpectedly ran into a former server from The

Harborview.

he

She said she had already quit. The Harborview could no longer even make payroll, so it had started laying people off.

“Ms. Carter, the truth is, Nathan was the one who had Zoey secretly mark up the prices at the time. Zoey just got too greedy and let the whole thing spiral out of control.”

I listened to the server and smiled. None of that had anything to do with me anymore.

And The Harborview, once a long-standing local institution, was now slowly fading away.
