I Was Planning Our Wedding When He Told Me He Had a Wife Chapter 13

Chloe stared at the calm Evelyn across from her. “Evelyn Jones, you think you’re really happy now, don’t you?” Her voice was tight.

Evelyn just smiled faintly, a tacit confirmation. The reaction completely pierced Chloe.

She stepped forward, her voice suddenly shrill, “Have you really forgotten how your mother died with her eyes open at your wedding? Forgotten how your child turned into a pool of blood, staining your wedding gown?”

She finished, staring hard at Evelyn’s face, waiting for her collapse.

But Evelyn only slightly tilted her head. Her face still wore that pure and harmless confusion, “Chloe, what on earth are you talking about? Blood and death, how scary.”

“My mom texted me just this morning saying she mailed me some cured meat from back home.”

“As for a child…” She shyly lowered her head, gently touching her flat abdomen, her tone full of longing. “Jason and I plan to have one after we’re married. You’re well-informed.” The smile, the tone, was flawless. As if Chloe’s story was truly some horror tale from another world.

Chloe was choked, her chest tight, a surge of vicious anger shot up. “Still pretending!” She leaned forward abruptly. “You think forgetting makes it go away? He never loved you. If he did, would he have walked away from you at the altar to carry me out?”

“Would I be the one in his house, with his name, all these years? And you were the easy option. Presentable. And your mother… your baby… they’re dead because you were too blind to see what was right in front of you.”

This time, the smile on Evelyn’s face slowly faded. When she lifted her eyes, a thin layer of ice had formed in their depths. “Chloe Smith,” her voice wasn’t loud, but it made Chloe’s heart tighten. “Do you know the biggest difference between a person and an object?”

Chloe froze.

“An object stays wherever it’s placed. But a person,” Evelyn stood up, looking down at her from above, “should know their place. If you’re meant to be a quiet ornament in the corner, don’t keep trying to jump onto the stage and give orders.”

Chloe was shocked. “You…”

“You think because you live in his house, spend his money, that makes you ‘Mrs. Miller’?” She leaned in slightly, closer, speaking in a tone only the two could hear, slow and deliberate, “That legal document is your protective charm. And it’s also your coffin lid.”

“Who do you think matters more to him now? You, the ‘responsibility’ trouble he has to deal with? Or me, the fiancée who ‘lost her memory’ because of him?”

Chloe’s face turned from white to ashen, staring hard at the woman before her. She’d thought Evelyn truly had amnesia, had become a fool living with her mother’s killer. She hadn’t expected her to be clear-minded, every word piercing her deepest fearful pain point, Jason had changed.

“Are you done, Chloe Smith?”

Chloe’s body stiffened.

“Didn’t you think that as long as that marriage certificate exists, you’d always have the winning hand?” Evelyn raised her eyes to look at her. “Take a good look now. Who’s winning? Hmm?”

“You… you never lost your memory at all!”

“Shh…” Evelyn raised her index finger to her lips. “Try a strawberry, Chloe. They’re very sweet.”
