His steps halted for a second. He thought he must be hallucinating. Maybe his mind was so full of how to clean up the mess, how to “reason” with Evelyn later, that he’d imagined that hand was hers.

After finishing everything, he left the hospital with Chloe. An inexplicable unease settled in his heart.

Chloe suddenly said she was hungry. He had to take her to a quiet restaurant nearby for a meal.

Coming out, the cold wind blew against him, clearing his chaotic thoughts a little. Jason took out his phone. Only then did he realize that after being away from the wedding venue for so long, Evelyn hadn’t tried to contact him at all.

“Hello,” a completely unfamiliar female voice on the other end cut him off. “Are you the patient’s family member?”

Jason’s words came to an abrupt halt. All his prepared lecturing stuck in his throat. He was momentarily stunned, not reacting. “…Who is this? Where’s Evelyn Jones?”

“This is the Central City Hospital Emergency Department. The phone’s owner is currently undergoing emergency surgery and cannot take calls.”

“Surgery?!” Jason’s voice shot up. “What surgery?”

“The patient is experiencing a miscarriage with severe hemorrhaging. The situation is critical and requires family consent.”

“Additionally, an elderly female patient brought in with her was pronounced dead after resuscitation efforts failed. Family is also needed for follow-up arrangements…”
